Resident has refund spent

Published Saturday, January 26, 2008

Dawn Ketcham of Fergus Fall knows how she’ll spend the rebate check proposed by President George Bush if his economic stimulus plan is approved by the U.S. Congress... or so she told ABC News on Friday. The Fergus Falls woman made national online headlines Friday when she said, "An extra few hundred dollars will definitely come in handy. ... I will be spending some on summer clothes for my son, since I think he outgrew every article of clothing from last summer. New school clothes will be on the to-buy list as well. As far as fun things go, we have a big family camping trip planned for late this summer, so that's most likely where the rest will get spent." Let’s hope the measure is passed so Dawn and other Otter Tail County residents can cross some items off their shopping lists...

Speaking of making headlines, the Fergus Falls Fire Department graced the pages of the St. Paul Pioneer Press Friday in a story about Eagan firefighters. The story mentioned that Fergus Falls for years has offered firefighters a free place to live — housing as many as five to 10 at a time...

Politicians sure can pick opportune times to visit communities. Take Al Franken, for example. The U.S. Senate candidate will be visiting Fergus Falls on Saturday. That just happens to be the day hundreds and hundreds of people will be out and about enjoying our annual Frostbite Festival. You can meet Franken from 6-8 p.m. at the Bigwood Event Center...

Fergus Falls Public Library Director Walt Dunlap says many non-city residents use the library, too. “When both clientels are considered, it sometimes feels like we are trying to put ten pounds of service into a five pound bag!” Dunlap told The Journal this week.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

My refund check is going to the Barak Obama for President campaign. Tax breaks during a war...only one of the few unprecedented idiotic things this President has done, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I'm going to Vegas with mine. Got any takers? Remember what happens there, stays there. How about it Bucksteel,Chip, etc.?

pilsnerurquel, why so obtuse? Don't you realize the refund was overwhelming approved by a Democratic Congress and its leadership Nancy Pelosi? But course since Bush was involved it's "unprecendtially idiotic." Get a grip, not everything is Bush's fault. Say Hi to Franken for me when you see him.

Well Perry, then maybe you can explain how GWB has managed to spend us into a $194 TRILLION DOLLAR Federal Deficit. No Democrat in histoy has ever managed to spend that much money in 8 years. "Tax cut and spend" should be the new Republican montra. They've certainly lived up to it.

Dead wrong pilsnerurquel. LBJ raided the Social Security funds to keep the Vietnam War funded. And he spent it in LESS than 8 years. I'm not a Republican, but I know it's not just a "party" thing. A president will try to keep funding any way they can.

For everyone who despises Bush, becareful. Italy just wanted a change at their last elections. They got it. The guy they overwhelmingly elected essentially destroyed their government in less than 6 months.

I do not think I know anyone that would have trouble spending that money... right or wrong! ;-)

You people talk about the refund as if it were like winning the lottery. Complain, complain, complain.......if you don't like it, donate yours to the deficit......or are you mad because you don't qualify?

And you're certain Obama won't be a spender? Please explain how Universal Health Care will operate?

Posted by Kloob (anonymous) on January 29, 2008 at 3:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Universal Health Care will be funded by savings that the new Ethanol Plant will be bringing to us on gasoline. Gotta love the new ethanol plant!

I think everyone should use it to put a down payment on something they can't afford, like a new 4x4 truck that gets 10 miles per gal, then drive it around town as much as you can, before it gets repoed, especially to church on those beautiful summer sundays, where you can complain about the fuel prices, curse the Arabs and plot ways to "Just Nuke them" and steal their oil! All in the name of God mind you. That truely would be the Patriotic thing to do.
