Fire destroys Wilkin home:

A House in Kent was totally destroyed by fire early Friday morning, just hours after its occupant moved into the residence.

After moving in the last of his belongings last night, fire broke out at the house Daniel Miranowski just purchased at 108 Harris St., Kent

No one was injured, Wilkin County Sheriff Tom Matejka said.

The Abercrombie Fire Department was called out around 4:30 a.m., assisted by Colfax, Christine and Wolverton fire departments, fighting the blaze until about 8 a.m. The fire started in the basement of the home, spreading from the chimney to the roof. Miranowski and his brother (name not available) were able to escape unharmed with most of their belongings.

“As the roof was on fire, they just kept running in and out,” Matejka said.

The house was an older story-and-a-half structure. Cause of the fire has not been determined and it is still under investigation. Foul play is not suspected, Matejka said.

Battle Lake scam:

An attempted scam was reported to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. A Battle Lake resident reported being contacted by UPS, which stated it would be delivering a check to his residence in one hour and would be needing cash to cover taxes for the check. UPS had no record of the delivery and does not accept cash.

This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
