Spending cuts yes — gas tax increase no
Published Tuesday, February 19, 2008
Yes our roads need repair. A lot of us have cut back on our driving because of the cost of fuel. There is talk of an increase in the gas tax by 5 to 10 cents a gallon, this will be a big burden on a bunch of senior citizens who are already having a tough go of things..
Raise the cost of license fees a few dollars, personalized license plate fees should increase to double and our leaders’ per diem should be cut in half and also their mileage rate should be cut.
There are other ways to get money, other than raise taxes.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by pilsnerurquel (anonymous) on February 19, 2008 at 6:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Are you seriously saying you would object to paying a few more cents at the pump in order to keep our roads and bridges safe?! The greedy me me me mentality that goes along with those who oppose tax increases is staggering. How else is the government supposed to pay for all the things we take for granted and exactly what programs do you propose that we cut? Education? Health care? Head Start? Veteran's Programs? The money has to come from somewhere. It's time to end the greed and selfishness that has caused the deterioration of our roads and bridges in Minnesota.

I agree with Dave on this, at least the first part about not raising the taxes. I can't understand how the state can NEED as much money as they tax everybody. The first thing to do is cut waste. We pay taxes on everything, think about it.

Cut waste is a very good answer. Start with a major one. The Iraq War for starters, then you could move on to all the money spent to fight the (so called War on Terror) If people still had common sense (but that died when the women sued Mcdonalds for the hot coffee), we would see that we are being misled into seeing our country get into debt, and our kids and grandkids haveing to pay the price.

Good lord!!! when did the State of Minnesota start funding the Iraq war or the war on terror. This is almost as bad as every degree in temp. change being blamed on global warming, or how about Y2K remember that joke. I got an idea, come up for a little air.
