City adopts League’s resolution
Published Wednesday, February 20, 2008
Since transportation issues are expected to be a prominent issue this Legislative session, Fergus Falls has adopted the League of Minnesota Cities’ transportation resolution, as it includes more options.
Some highlights of the resolution, as presented to the City Council Tuesday, include:
• A permanent increase in the gas tax.
• Indexing of the gas tax, provided there is a limit on how much the tax can be increased for inflation in a given amount of time.
• Local funding options that would allow cities to raise revenues for roads, bridges, sidewalks, trails and transit.
• Funding to build roads to standards that can accommodate year-round transport of heavy loads.
The city’s Legislative Committee has outlined it’s objectives for this legislative session:
• Regional Treatment Center redevelopment initiatives.
• Regional library funding.
• Extending the JOBZ benefits term.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by johnnyb (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 4:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I wonder how the poor folks in our city can afford a gas tax on top of our high gas prices we are being told to expect this summer. We are seeing a new record high price on crude oil, it has broken a 100 dollar's. I got a better idea, stop the war in Iraq and we would have money to do all the things in this country that we can not afford to do. Ask yourself who is gaining from this war?
