Knights upset Lakers

Published Monday, March 3, 2008

ST. CLOUD — The second-seeded West Central Area Knights upset top-ranked Minnewaska 53-28 Saturday for the Section 6AA West Championship.

Pat Anderson’s Knights will now face East Champion Albany at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Cloud State University’s Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies are the second-ranked team in Class AA. The winner advances to the state tournament March 12-15 in Minneapolis.

The Knights held the favored Lakers to a cool 20.5 percent shooting clip on the St. John’s University court Saturday. Erika Olson’s 10 points led the Lakers. Amie Chan grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lakers.

Taylor Brekke paced the Knights with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Liza Torgerson and Krystal Lacey netted 11 points apiece.

A 14-0 second half run by the Knights doomed the Lakers.

The Knights out-rebounded the Lakers 30-20 and stole the ball 21 times. Brekke led the way with five swipes.

“I can’t say enough about the team,” said WCA head coach Pat Anderson. “Everyone played as hard as they possibly could.”

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
