Man who shot at Wadena school bus in custody

Published Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Timothy E. Mindermann

Timothy E. Mindermann, 19, Wadena, could be facing second degree assault charges after he allegedly shot an air soft-type handgun at three school buses carrying children from the Wadena School District Monday. Two students sustained minor injuries, according to Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department. Mindermann is accused of shooting from a motor vehicle at the buses while he and the buses were traveling down State Highway 29.

Mindermann is expected to appear in Otter Tail County District Court Thursday to be formally charged, according to the Otter Tail County Attorney’s Office.

“It wasn’t a firearm, but it was a weapon that could cause severe injury or death,” Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Boen said.

Around 3:10 p.m. Monday, Minnesota State Patrol received a report that buses from the Wadena School District were possible involved in a shooting-type incident on State Highway 29 near Otter Tail County Highway 75. Windows of three separate buses were broken from possible gun shots. A small hole was located in widows of each bus.

Two individuals were later located. Mindermann and a juvenile passenger were later interviewed. Mindermann was arrested Tuesday and is being held in Otter Tail County Detention.

The incident is still under investigation by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department and Minnesota State Patrol.

No representative from the Wadena School district was available for comment.

Let me guess, was he using Meth at the time of this stupid decision to shoot at a school bus full of innocent children? This kid needs to be locked up for some time no matter what the circumstances are for this decision he made. This involves children directly, and if it were one of my kids on that bus, he's lucky he's in custody because he wouldn't be able to find a hiding place to get away from me, I bet the childrens parents feel the same. Justice needs to be served to this idiot. There is no reasonable explanation for this kid to get off of these charges. A big yellow school bus is a big yellow school bus.

With all the school shootings going around this should not be taken lightly. These people are putting children in danger and should be taken as a warning sign. Thank goodness nobody was killed. I hope there is an update on this article after his court date. What was his intentions? Should the court be looking at attempted murder instead of an assault charge? He was shooting at a SCHOOL BUS,whether it was a firearm or not he was still "SHOOTING" at a bus full of kids.

I am a mom who had two children on one of the busses. This is a very upsetting situation. Who would do something like this? I would like to say that the bus driver handled this situation tremendously well. The kids were only aware of a window breaking and there was not a panic situation. The driver kept moving and got the kids away from this horrible person. I hope this young man gets the punishment he deserves and more.

I just heard on TV that the prosecutor is deciding IF...IF he will be charged with a crime! How outrageous is that???? IF??????

What is wrong with people? How much of an idoit was this person. to me maybe we should shoot him with his gun so he knows how it feels

I wonder if he started out by hurting innocent animals?
He probably is lucky he is in jail right now. If one of my kids were on the bus I would take it VERY personally.
Try and hurt my kids, you must deal with me!
3girlmom, i hope your kids are OK. My thoughts are with them. Are they Ok about getting back on the bus? maybe you have a case. As far as a civil suit against this FREAK!

And it sounds like Kudos to the driver.

I wonder what the other inmates think about what he did. They might look at him as if he was a child molester. Maybe the detention staff could "look the other way" for a bit.
justice served!

i know that guy...i grew up with him actually..there was no meth no drugs no alcohol nothing putting him under the influence...tim is a good kid... he just does some stupid things..and i know for a fact that he never meant to do any harm...and if there is anybody that thinks otherwise can just go and jump...

Posted by Notthere (anonymous) on March 6, 2008 at 4:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Obviously, there was no "growing up" involved.
And this "stupid" thing he did is going to cost him for a long time. After he gets done with his sentence he should probably move out of the area. Would you hold a grudge if someone did something "stupid" and tried to hurt a loved one of yours?

ok.... you dont know anything about his case i really know it was an accident i was in the car also. and for all u who love the fact he is in jail here is some news for ya he is at home where he belongs, and next time before you comment on some stupid bulls**t that you hear on the radio or news that was posted by the police dep. u should not be 2 quick 2 judge Tim is a American soldier in the Army and Is Here to protect us ..!! so Y the F do you think he would be out to perpously hurt innocent children. thanks for your time and before u post another comment think about what i just said , ACCIDENTS HAPPEN 2 EVERY 1 and you all know that. Also according to police reports and information posted by the pioneer journal, NO ONE WAS HURT OR INJURED AT ALL. ! thanks for your time ...BTW his father is also in the hospital fighting with heart troubles

There is 2 sides too every story and before u judge u should hear them both ! sometimes the truth means more that a list of lies.

And 1 more question to ask yourself has anyone ever died from an airsoft gun .... go buy one and shoot yourself with it and c if u die ....i tryed it it just bounced off my arm and laded next to me and this is a co2 powered gun.. unlike the spring powered gun used by Tim my gun was capible of 350 Feet per second unlike the one used by tim that gun had 175 feet per second . like it says in the police report these babys are dangerious, and may posssibly cause death 2 a small frog or bug ....but i seriously dought it though

Posted by daidres (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 9:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Alright, so because it was an airsoft gun, and because he is an American soldier( which he really should know better not to shoot a gun unless you have an intended target) makes it ok to shoot at a school bus full of children. By the way, yes, the airsoft gun can kill someone if the ammo hits in the right spot. He should know better not to shoot at a school bus, what the H**ll was he thinking? Yeah, there's 2 sides to every story, we'd love to hear his side of the story and why he shot at a school bus. Oh, and to you little arctic kitty kat, why don't you come over here so us moms can do some "cleaning" up on you! You mess with kids in anyway, be it as a joke, or an "accident" you are gonna pay! If you don't like us baggin on your buddy, too bad, he could've "bagged" one of them innocent kids. Go play, and the next time one of your buddies pulls out a gun of any sort in a vehicle, I'd jump out if I were you, you're lucky you haven't been charged with conspiring, I'm sure if the county wanted to, they could find something to charge ya with! We can tell you must not have any children, like cousins, neices or nephews in your life, because you'd be a little more understanding if you did. Maybe your Buddy should deal with what he did and count his blessings he didn't get into more trouble than he already is, hopefully he feels stupid and remorsefull for what he did. Tell him to thank his lucky stars.

No meth, no drugs, no alcohol, so whats his defense? Stupidity?

Posted by daidres (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 9:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, and you are right, we can not judge any one person for the mistakes or good deeds they have done in their lives, in the end, only one person can judge, and right about now I am thinking HE isn't too happy with Tim. The society we live in isn't too forgiving these days with all of the bad shootings happening. You can't blame parents for being the way they are when they hear of someone shooting at the bus their kids are riding on. Tim did make a mistake, or whatever defense he is claiming, clean up your act, that's all parents want, his too, if his dad is in the hospital with heart problems, I am sure hearing of this incident didn't help his recovery any. When you hear your parents saying "you about gave me heart failure" don't take it so lightly next time.

Posted by MeinTeil (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 12:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

to dearest daidres...
It appalls me to think that you have children of your own. If you really believed that which you have said in the comment about the one to judge you would realize how asinine you were being. I grew up catholic, so I might be able to shed a little light on your stupidity, I believe the quote goes something like, 'Let he without sin cast the first stone.' Who are you to assume that you know what is going on in His head. By your very words you are slandering his good book.
I must say that I agree that he could have 'bagged' himself a kid, however if you knew anywhere near what I know about weapons, you would know that the only way for him to have 'bagged' a kid, as you so eloquently put it, would be to hit one in the eye. Now before you think I'm agreeing with your pompous stupidity, realize that the 'airsoft pellet,' which is a plastic bb, broke through the window... Lets think about that for a second shall we, a plastic bb that has a velocity of 175 f/s breaking a plexiglas window... and then have enough speed left over to hurt a kid. Wow, when put like that, I don't see how you couldn't be more far from the truth. Even with a CO2 powered airsoft gun, it is very unlikely that death could be the result.
Now for the part you have been waiting for... Yes I did grow up with Timothy E. Mindermann. Tim graduated the year after me from high school. More than that though, he was my neighbor all of my life. Now you are going to discard my 'rantings' as you will call them because I am of a biased opinion. Well, to that I say Bollucks! If you noticed I have let no biased seep into my evaluation of the situation. I know for a fact that there were no drugs involved because Tim isn't stupid enough to do them...
However, he is stupid enough to make a mistake, but then again, as I have just pointed out, so are you. Please take this into consideration before responding, and realize that I will be able to argue any point you bring up.
On a side note, I do not agree that a woman's place is in the kitchen, however, I do believe that if we are spending this much time debating a subject that most everyone on this comment board knows nothing about, and moreover about a kid, that we know nothing about, then yes, you do have too much free time on your hands. I admit that I have free time on my hands, but I put it to use studying For my double major at college, Where I am an R.A. and in the Honors program. Geez, that sounds kinda like me bragging, however it isn't bragging if I point out what simply is. To allow myself some ease of mind, I'm going to give you my real name, so you can check into my claims if you wish. The first name should be sufficient, seeing as there was only one of me that graduated from Wadena High School in 2006.

I shall end this nice and simply, Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your forthcoming rebuttal.

Yours in good spirits,
MeinTeil, A.K.A. Lukas

The FF Journal Website says it was a BB Gun, The radio said it was a pellet gun, and the people on this web-forum say it was an air-soft gun. Which was it?? There are significant differences between the three.

I never meant to pass judgement on this "Kid" but this whole situation has to do with one fact, he shot a Gun, at a school bus. My ranting and raving is only because I do have children and I am scared for them for the society they are growing up in. Why should I let a subject of this matter be taken so lightly when he is not a kid, he is a legal adult and he should have known better. Sorry that is appalls you that I have children, after you are through with your College degree, marry and have children of your own, you will realize that we are not passing judgement, only worrying about the future our children will be living in. Hopefully Tim, your childhood friend, does realize it wasn't a smart move on his behalf, and like I stated earlier, he may not run into many people that are forgiving of these crimes committed against children. I am one of them. Yes I do know that A gun of that calliber can kill, in the eye, temple or juggler. He's just lucky he didn't hurt one of them. You seem to know so much about weapons, because of all of your self proclaimed knowledge. Don't be an enabler, that's the worst thing you could do for Tim. PS who gives a crap what kind of gun it was in the first place. He shot at a school bus with kids in it!!!! ANd yes I am a stay at home mom, and loving it because I can sit at home on my @ss and comment all I want on this site ! Glad you are a Catholic, you are pretty good at passing judgement too, I am norwegian, and always get the last word in ! Argue till your fingers turn blue from Typing, you won't change my mind, Tim made a horrible mistake !

Posted by daidres (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 3:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Just read his statement at the Duluth site, I bet he's pretty pissed right now at the girl who "narked" him out for shooting the gun. A witness, in the same vehicle, hmmmm, so what really did happen, accidently had the window down, accidently had the gun loaded, accidently shot 3 different buses. HE doesn't have anything to prove to me, just the state of MN. Good Luck ! Yeah, sounds like a toy gun too, but still wasn't a smooth move on his behalf.

Posted by daidres (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 3:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

AKA Lucas, you are sooo young, and seem to be sooo wise, why don't you represent Tim as his lawyer beings you are so confident that this was an accident and that no way could that gun have caused any harm because of its 175 valocity bla bla bla, Tim is a prime example they use to try to take away our Right to Bear Arms. AS an Avid outdoors woman, I take any sort of gun serious, Tim should too beings he is in the military. Argue til' your blue, world's changing, and small mistakes involving guns are taken more seriously, no matter what the circumstances.

oceanictoe, How could he have not met to shoot at the bus? Did he not see them? They are big and yellow and there was three of them!! And another thing you stated that you went and got one to see what it would do, well here is the thing I haven't heard of someone dieing from a shot to the arm...nice try trying to cover your friends stupidity. As for him being a soldier I bet he wont be invited back to the army any time soon...Hope he stays at home and doesn't see anymore school buses.

Posted by JL (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 3:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

one more thing check out the records for March 7th. Your little friend admitted to shooting at the buses and has been charged for them and it is classified as a felony...try to back him up now. If I am correct the army doesn't take felonies lightly.

Posted by daidres (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 3:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Anyone else want to join me on this topic, would love it, I don't think that Tims friends realize how much of an issue at hand there is with Shootings. To them, sounds like they think it wasn't a big deal because of the Type of gun used. They agree it was a mistake, but it's not a big deal cause it's an airsoft gun.

Posted by Flashbang (anonymous) on March 7, 2008 at 7:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If and when the Army gets wind of this, there will be some type of action taken by them. If it is a feloney offense he will receive some type of discharge, anything but honorable.
And this shooting yourself in the arm to prove it won't kill you is not a good example. Take Mr. 9mm and shoot yourself in the arm, I doubt you'll die. It'll hurt, but I doubt you would die. Aim at your eye and see what happens. Even from 20 or 30 feet, that pellet gun will pop your eye. You can't cover for something as dumb as what this kid did. His best defense would be to say that he did a stupid thing and he's going to take the punishment he deserves.

I think it's kind of strange how drunk drivers kill thousands more people each year, but yet the charges filed against him are greater than that of a person getting a DWI. Granted what he did was wrong, but I think the 'system' has it's priorities messed up. There would be no way of him killing someone with that airsoft gun from the way he shot that bus. Tis Tis...

Posted by concernedcitizen (anonymous) on March 12, 2008 at 9:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Let us first get this straight; he did not make a mistake. He did this deliberately, with forethought and malice. He purposely pointed a "gun" and pulled the trigger. What did he intend to happen? It does not matter the type of gun. Look at the bigger picture. It was not an accident. This is the second time a 'gun' has been pulled by someone in jest. The first time was when my wife was driving in FF. They were driving around pointing a "gun" at other drivers and laughing as they drove off. The police caught those individuals also and nothing came of it. I now have a "Permit to Carry" and will exercise my rights to defend myself and those around me if the need arises. You never know who may be watching. It is only after getting caught does one think of the consequences of their actions.

Ok, i need to say something, this is going way overboard and you should all be ashamed, i know tim as well, but not that well, he was always a good kid, but he did tend to do stupid things, yes i believe this was deliberate, but i don't think it was as bad as people were making it, kids, if you will, do things far worse than this everyday and don't get caught, i am in the military, and they will find out about this, they always do, you can't get away with anything, he made a mistake, but instead of passing judgement maybe you should say a prayer not only for your children but for him as well, being the good parents and friends you may be i'm sure your children and friends will be ok, but obviously Tim needs a little help, the military has a guilt factor as well, i guarantee you once they find out if they haven't already, they will make his life a living hell, not that he's undeserving but i wouldn't wish military punishment on anyone, i give it as well as take it being active duty. and on a final note, i am appalled that anyone on this comment space would wish for anything to harm anyone, talking about shoot yourself and provoking suicide, what kind of example is that? People can act like a child at anytime, its all a point of maturity, and before you type another comment make sure you think about what you type and who of the millions that could read this would think about you and our community, we live in one of the safest places in the world and your making it out to be a dangerous area, i know, i am currently stationed at Fort Bliss, in el paso, Texas and people get killed for no reason at all every night and don't even get close to any type of publicity, lastly, and again, you should all be ashamed at the things you are saying about people, not just Tim, but other people on the blog, please stop attacking each other, should he get jailtime, NO, so he be punished? definitely no matter how they choose to do it, people learn from their mistakes and i do believe this is his first offense, i am open to any comments about this and open to private e-mail at ack7999@yahoo.com please feel free to send me a message at any time.
