Cartoons are tasteless
Published Saturday, March 15, 2008
I have recently been appalled at the number of tasteless, immature, ignorant and blasphemous "cartoons" you have run. First was Ms. Clinton depicted as a whore and then as a pesky fly smashed by Mr. Obama. Yes, Obama won a long string of minor states, but Clinton won the two plums without which no president has ever been elected. They were less than 100 delegates apart at that point. Obama is not the shoe-in the editorial cartoonist wants to believe.
Finally the worst offences — "Dilbert's" Hey-soos. He may have put in the Spanish pronunciation as an aside, but the vast majority of Americans will still pronounce his name "Jesus.". With Jesus depicted as doing senseless miracles - restoring a full head of hair; changing coffee into wine — there is no question that the character is depicted as a modern Jesus Christ.
This goes beyond blasphemy. Don't you realize that for millions of us Jesus is the One who loves us best; the One who is our dearest friend; the One we depend on for the provision of all our needs; and above all, the One who lived a sin-free life for the purpose of becoming the Lamb of God, worthy of being the sacrificial Lamb — the Lamb without blemish — to pay for us all the price of remission of our sins? With all due respect to you as Editor, I adamantly believe that "Dilbert" and editorial cartoons of this sort be banished from the Journal.
If ever there was an example of modern-day "Yellow Journalism," the Journal is quickly becoming one. Please give us credit for intelligence, good taste, and common decency; and respect our beliefs.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by thethinker (anonymous) on March 17, 2008 at 11:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Hey Maggie - get some thicker skin and learn to deal with mundane events that in no way diminish the accomplishments of Jesus. Portraying Jesus in print is not blasphemy (which the Islamic religion says any reproductions of Mohammud are - but I digress). I have followed the recent Dilbert storyline and I think it is rather funny. As a matter of fact, I think Jesus would find the humor in it too.
PS: good to see you want to "banish" print. Nice support of the 1st amendment. Good job. I suppose you want to ban or banish anything you don't agree with. Great.

Hmmm.... Funny how people are so willing to attack people like Maggie who express their love and faith in Jesus Christ. Seems you wouldn't dare do that to any other religion, but the name of Jesus seems to be powerful.
As for you people who call yourselve's 'Christians' and are passive of how Jesus is portrayed, maybe it's time to take personal inventory. - God Bless

I never attacked Maggie for her love of Jesus. Nope. That sort of inference is simply inaccurate. I stated an objection to her wish to ban things she disagreed with that are not harmful - this nation is too full of people who want everything banned because they are "offended" by it. Try acting like an adult and just choose not to observe that which offends you. The comic in question is funny and not derrogative. Also, as silly as it may be to assume knowledge of the Creator, I am certain Jesus would see that comic and laugh a bit. A God without humor is no God for me - and I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Jesus has a humorous side.
