Comets claim sub-section title

MORRIS — Gregg Preston had his Hillcrest Comets ready to play ball Saturday night and the result was a 70-55 victory over Wheaton-Herman-Norcross in the South Sub-Section 6A championship game at UMM.

The Comets shot a sizzling 66 percent from the field with four players scoring in double figures. Cody Aasness paced the Comets with 25 points while Jared Schultz canned 14 and Josh Forland and Joey Battillo both netted 10.

The Comets will now take a 21-6 record into the Section 6A championship game Tuesday at Concordia College in Moorhead. The Comets with face North champ Norman County East in a 6:30 p.m. tilt. The Eagles have a 23-5 record.

“It was really a great team effort,” said Preston. “We had no prior expectations so it is fun to get this far.”

The Comets held a slim 28-25 lead over the Warriors at the half but dominated the second period 42-30.

Tim Erickson grabbed nine of Hillcrest’s 22 rebounds. Battillo recorded four steals and joined Erickson with four assists.

Luke Schmitz paced the Warriors with 16 points. Jay Nelson added 10.

The Comets entered the the sub-section tournament ranked second while the Warriors were ranked first.
