Fergus Tire/Rotary skaters win Squirt championship
Sunday’s inter-squad house league championship game marked the end to a long season of Squirt Hockey. The Service Food team (in green) played with the Noon Kiwanis team (red) against the combined Fergus Tire and Rotary team (white and blue).
With 1:09 left in the 1st, Tosten Mann fired a shot resulting in a rebound. Alex Phillipe chipped the rebound into the back of the net to put the Service Food/Noon Kiwanis team up by 1 at the end of the first.
Just into the second period Ean Goos picked up a loose puck off of a face off and took it to the net. Deking left, then right, then left, Goos slipped one past the goalie to tie the game at 1-all.
Just two minutes later, Phillipe fired a shot from the left side that bounced onto the stick of Abby Hobbs. Hobbs wasted no time in firing the puck past the net tender to put the Service Food/Noon Kiwanis team back on top.
Nearly three minutes slipped by before Peter Johnson took the puck to the net. With a dandy move that dropped the goalie into his butterfly, Johnson maneuvered around the now planted goalie and slipped one into the net.
Shortly thereafter, at the 8:31 point of the second period, Kyler Peterson was the beneficiary of a face off in the offensive zone. He ripped a wrist shot from the top of the left circle beating the goalie high glove side, putting the Fergus Tire/Rotary team up 3-2. Three minutes passed until Brady Halverson, hustling as always, picked up a loose puck and buried it in the back of the net to tie it up 3-3. That would be as close to a win as the Red and Green team would come as the Fergus Tire/Rotary team went on a scoring binge.
Starting the third period, Goos turned on his afterburners and went coast to coast. With a wide open path to the goalie and dizzying stick handling he again slipped one into the net. Exactly two minutes later, Peterson mirrored Goos’s speed and maneuvers to put the Blue and White team up by two. As both teams fought for the puck, Ryan Smith got control of it and passed it to a driving Lauren Norgren who quickly released a shot that found net.
With the Service/Kiwanis team now down 6-3, Mitchell Toso threw a shot on net from the left side that went off the goalie and into the net.
With just over two minutes left in the game, the Green and Red team pulled their goalie and added a skater to tilt the odds in their favor. The gamble didn’t pay off as the Blue and White team found an open net with 34 seconds left, putting the game out of reach.
Derek Christianson made 23 saves for Service/Kiwanis. Andrew MacFarlane made 22 saves for the winning Fergus Tire/Rotary team.

Yea McDonalds! Great job! And thank you L & J for sponsoring a team. You do a lot for the kids in the community, right down to suppling juice/pop year after year for events at your children's schools, etc. Much more than some parents can say they do. So just sit back & be proud!
