Area youth are talented

Published Monday, March 24, 2008

It was fun looking at the faces of those leaving the Fergus Falls Middle School auditorium Thursday night after the school’s performance of “Guys and Dolls.” Listening to the comments from the audience was equally fun as the general consensus was that people had watched one of the finest theatrical performances to grace a local stage in a long time.

The musical was professionally done with a young cast of talented actors. The talent displayed in the cast is a tribute to the Fergus Falls community and the importance it puts in the performing arts.

The singers, dancers, actors, technical and back-stage crews made the performance shine.

Billy Eerdmans as Sky Masterson, Lexi Wedll as Sarah Brown, and Abby Kiefer as Miss Adelaide took turns stealing the show.

It’s been a long time since so many members of the school community were allowed a moment to shine, but by including the seventh and eighth grade choirs into the cast, it appeared that literally hundreds of students were allowed to join the cast and share their song and dance.

Congratulations to director and choreographer Dana Flint, the actors, and all those who worked on the set, costumes and lights and sound.

It was great to see the streets of New York brought to a small stage in Fergus Falls — and watch everyone have such a fun time doing it!

The middle school choirs always put on a play and only about a dozen members get key roles while the rest sit in the commons waiting for their chance to cram together on stage. These "plays" are the reason my child is no longer in choir. It is only a big deal to the few kids in the main roles, the hundreds of other kids just get to miss school for a week to practice. All choir members are required to participate. If you want to see some dedication and hard work put forth by the young people in this town try seeing the School of Dance Spring concert this June.

Tapdancer,
Its a shame you have to say negative things about something that many students and one very talented director put into a big show like that. What would you suggest doing to make this work? How can you do a middle school musical any other way? How could you do a musical any other way? Of course there are going to be lead roles in a musical. I think it was Shakespeare that said, there are no small roles, only small actors...or small parents of actors.
