Running the Boston

Humann challenges toughest marathon

Published Thursday, April 24, 2008

Perfect weather and perfect fans ruled Monday when Traci Humann ran the 112th Boston Marathon.

The 34-year-old social worker at Lakeland Hospice and Home Care was taking on the nation’s oldest and toughest course for the second straight year.

Humann turned the 26.2 mile course in 3 hours and 30 minutes, beating her 2007 time by 16 minutes.

The world-famous marathon is held on Patriots Day, a state holiday in Massachusetts, and everyone comes out to watch.

“The people in Boston are so proud of that marathon,” said Humann. “It’s crazy.”

Boston is not just any marathon. Runners have to qualify for the event, which weeds out all but the most dedicated marathoners. Humann had to have a 3 hour, 40 minute qualifying time to participate this year.

In addition to running the marathon, Humann watched the Olympic Trials on Sunday.

“I found that to be just as exciting as the actual marathon,” said Humann.

Humann has been running for eight years. She started running for her health and now trains all year round. She averages 60-80 miles a week in her training regime and is a strong member of the Fergus Falls Running Club.

Humann plans to run the Fargo Marathon in May, Grandma’s Marathon in June and the Chicago Marathon in September.
