The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by Brandon (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 7:04 p.m.

Get the details. The community needs to know who isn't watching their kids properly.

Before you pass judgement get the facts. I am from Henning and will wait for the details before deciding what kind of parents they are. Accidents happen that is how life works.

I agree with pamelajo we don't even know if the kid was at home or not, and 2 year olds are quick little buggers...The parents could have been keeping a close eye and didn't know the paint thinner was around! Wait for the whole story before you jump on these parents.

Yuk, I can't imagine the 2 year old drank much. It couldn't have tasted very good!

I thought I drank paint thinner once, but it said "Tequila" on the bottle.

I hope the child is doing well. I too have a 2 year old and although I don't have chemicals in his reach at my home, both his grandparents do. I hope this was a simple mistake.

I am from Henning and Im friends with the parents. They are great parents. The bottle was empty but when mom seen the child holding it she did the right thing and called for the Henning Ambulance. The child is fine and healthy. Wait to hear the story before you pass judgement. Accidents happen, it is how we handle them and these parents did great.

It is the responsibilty of parents to make sure that ALL harmful products are locked away or put out of reach of children. You can't watch them every minute, and that is all it takes. Put child safe locks on cupboards and drawers, although many children can open them, it will slow them down a little. Lock up items like pesticides, cleaning products, paints, thinner, bleach...the list goes on and on. There are small alarms available that will alert the parent when a particular cupboard has been opened.
I am glad to hear the child is fine, but that empty thinner bottle never should been where he/she could find it. Better to be safe than sorry.

eagle_eye,
Are you a parent?? If so, I don't understand how you can be so naive. No matter how hard you try you can't shelter your children from everything - no matter how closely you watch them accidents will still happen. I agree that it is better to be safe than sorry - but I also think you should think before you speak (or type in this case) and not be too quick to pass judgement.
