Spend rebate wisely

Published Tuesday, April 29, 2008

The federal tax rebate means that, in Fergus Falls alone, based on 5,000 households receiving an average of $1,000 per household, the local economy will receive about $5 million in new cash in the coming weeks.

We would highly recommend paying down high-interest debt or adding to savings as the first alternative. However, for those planning to spend the money, please consider spending it locally first.

Whether it is for large-ticket items such as appliances or electronics, or stocking up on groceries, spending the money locally will clearly benefit our community. National studies show that a dollar spent locally is spent six to 15 times before it leaves the community. Furthermore, local business owners, and managers of locally-based national businesses, donate both money and time to the local community.

Our local businesses have plenty to offer, with competitive prices and good service. Let’s be sure to shop locally first before spending our stimulus checks elsewhere.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Right, like I'm going to go to a local business, pay 2700.00 for the same TV that Best Buy sells for 1900.00. Or,like th e refridge I bought in Fargo for 700.00,that a business in town here, wanted 950.00. These are actual examples! Going to Fargo has saved me big bucks! I'm willing to pay a little more for something here, but get serious, some businesses in this town don't want to compete. They say we'll match prices. When I walk through a business and get sticker shock' I don't stick around to try to deal with them.Get in line with your prices to start with! Don't tell me about buying locally when I see these same business owners living high off the hog, with new mansions, lake homes, winter vacations, and every kid in the family is driving a new suv, as soon as they turn 16! Then they get upset because we won't pay their ridiculous inflated prices.

Free advice: Save your money.

The so-called righteous pro-life shills for the greedy will drive us further down the road to ruin. You'll need every penny so you can get out of town before all hell breaks loose.

May God continue to give you what you deserve.

I agree with everything that's already been said. First and foremost there are some pretty rich business people in this area that could certainly afford to cut their prices a little to be comparable to others of the like and then MAYBE I'd consider shopping here. And for that matter, pay your employees a little better so that maybe they could afford to shop here as well. I would rather drive an hour to Fargo or to Alexandria and take my business there than pay the exorbitant prices for most everything in this town. Besides the fact that I don't need recommendations from you people on how to spend my money, thank you very much. Who do you think you are? Thanks, but I think I will save my money for a rainy day or maybe to have to pay those wallet gouging gas prices.

First, never pay the advertised or MSR price. ALL retailers will negotiate - even Home Depot. You just have to work them a little. Sure it takes time, but local also generally means service. I've had some terrible experiences with Best Buy service - loooong waits for repairs, during which the warranty expires - even though the item is being repaired. Sure some deals are better in Fargo or Alex, but take your time, do the research and negotiate. You may be surprised, or you may get the better price out of town. At least you know you did the best you could.

I think you had better re-figure your claims here. I would be extremely shocked to find 5,000 households (5,633 total households in Fergus according to wilkipedia) in a city of slightly more than 13,600 residents that will be getting back an average of $1,000 per household. Subtract the households that are getting nothing for a rebate, and you certainly do not come up with the amounts you claim. Just remember, all these businesses with the exorbitant prices are owned by residents that will get no rebate at all because they exceed the income limitations. Just another Democratic tax on the ant to support the lazy grasshopper. Just my opinion, no applause necessary.

First of all my opinion is that the government should not be giving out money that they don't have, but being we are getting the checks, everyone in my office has decided to buy american made guns with our checks.
