Development on track for Walgreens

Published Saturday, May 10, 2008

The developer behind a future Fergus Falls Walgreens says store construction is scheduled to begin as soon as July.

“We’re just moving along,” said Howard Bergerud, president of Semper Development.

That’s meant completion of land surveys and preparation for a presentation at a June 16 city council meeting, Bergerud said. Semper will look to get building permits following the meeting.

Walgreens is scheduled to open early next year along Lincoln Avenue across from Service Food. It will replace the Family Dollar Store, Moore Engineering, Cole’s Cameras and OK Pawn. Qwest will not move but Walgreens parking will border the building’s west side.

Representatives with Semper confirmed the drug store’s arrival in January after a year or so of speculation. Fergus Falls, it turned out, was just the kind of community the chain targets.

“We look for cities with certain size demographics,” Bergerud said. “Fergus is the size city that works for Walgreens.”

The area’s trade history played a role, too.

“Walgreens market research researched the entire trade area and found it could support a Walgreens,” Semper said.

“I think this is going to be nothing but positive,” said Harold Stanislawski, director of the Fergus Falls Economic Improvement Commission. “I think it’s especially good to get an investment in the downtown area.”

Walgreens is scheduled to open 550 stores nationwide in fiscal year 2008.

I wonder why corporate Walgreen's is choosing not to confirm a Fergus Falls location?

Hopefully this project moves along quicker than that strip mall joke that is built behind Arby's. It's nice there's still someone looking to expand in Fergus.
