Shol worthy of name on Fergus Falls airport road

Published Monday, May 19, 2008

In regards to Thursday's front page article regarding the naming of the airport access road, I would like to propose another name we should consider.

The Fergus Falls Municipal Airport was named Einar Mickelson Field in 1948 to honor a fallen war hero. We should all be grateful for Mr. Mickelson's sacrifice and I believe our gratitude has been clear by naming the airport after this special man.

But another name comes to mind when I think of aviation in Fergus Falls.

When I moved here in 1975 to begin many years of piloting for West Central Airways, the airport was just a shadow of what it is today.

The improvements are just too numerous to mention. One of the driving forces behind the years of construction, airport lighting and expansion was a man known to many of you.

During the airport improvement project the airport manager and owner of West Central Airways was Lucky Shol.

Known to so many area residents either from the airport itself or by Lucky and Blanche Shol's prized Viking Cafe in downtown Fergus Falls, he is without question a man who deserves recognition for the endless time and energy he put in to making our airport one that will serve our community far into the future.

Lucky Shol poured his heart and soul into making Einar Mickelson Field a model airport.

The time he spent planning, coordinating, nurturing and grooming our beautiful airport would be measured in years. He was truly a man of vision and an asset to our community throughout his lifetime.

I certainly have no quarrel with our airport being named after a war hero, but that small strip of access road should bear the name of Lucky Shol forever.

He was, indeed, one of the most unforgetable people I've ever known and easily deserving of naming the access road in his honor.

I think Lucky Shol would be a very appropriate name for the airport access road. He had such a vision for what it could be and worked very hard to make it what it is today. Making it known what an impact he had on the Fergus Falls Municipal Airport would be a great tribute to his life.

I completely agree with the statements above. Lucky took such pride in everything he did from the airport to the Viking Cafe to his family and friends. He was a great asset to this community and this would be a perfect way to remember and honor him.
