Dr. Paul Etzell
When the Cancer Care and Research Center opens in Fergus Falls in 2010, two world-class oncologists will be leading the way.
Dr. Paul Etzell and Dr. Wade Swenson will lead a clinical research program through Lake Region Healthcare’s participation in the North Central Cancer Treatment Group as well as providing personal patient care.
“What makes a cancer center stand out is the personal care you can give,” Etzell said.
Etzell and Swenson have provided care rooted in Fergus Falls for a number of years now.
Etzell joined the Fergus Falls Medical Group in 1997 after a storied career in Fargo.
Etzell was one of the driving forces behind the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo and served as the center’s medical director. Etzell earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota after attending the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He completed his fellowship in internal medicine and hematology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He practiced at MeritCare in Fargo before joining the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

Dr. Wade Swenson
A native of Clarissa, Etzell lives in Fergus Falls with his wife Mary Anne.
Swenson has been with the Fergus Falls Medical Group since 2005. A Moorhead native, Swenson received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota and served his residency at the University of Iowa hospital in Iowa City. It was at the university hospital that Swenson also completed his fellowship.
In addition to his studies in hematology and medical oncology, Swenson has a Masters degree in public health specializing in epidemiology.
Lake Region Healthcare officials say Swenson is the “Future face of oncology in Fergus Falls.”

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by FergusFamily (anonymous) on May 23, 2008 at 1:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with FergusFamily; a community of this size having a cancer center is unprecedented.
