Fergus Falls, Chinese to sign working agreement

Published Wednesday, May 28, 2008

When members of a Chinese delegation visit Fergus Falls tonight, they will sign an agreement saying talks will continue into the future.

The agreement is formally called a Memorandum of Understanding, and according to Richard Anderson of Campus Development Group (CDG), it’s a very positive thing for the Regional Treatment Center’s future.

“Basically it’s an agreement that we’re going to continue our conversations,” he said. “It’s very common in the educational business.”

The signing will take place at a welcome banquet beginning at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Bigwood Event Center.

Anderson has made multiple trips to China in the past several months, meeting with government and educational officials in Hunan Province and elsewhere. After all that the Chinese have head about the RTC and Fergus Falls, Anderson said, they are ready to see the area for themselves.

“They’ve asked me, ‘What’s Fergus Falls like?’” he said, “And I’ve said, ‘We’re trying to develop a school that I would want my granddaughter to attend.’”

The signing of the agreement tonight means talks between CDG and Chinese officials will continue beyond this week’s visit, with Anderson returning to China as soon as early June. Later that month, Anderson will travel to Chongqing, a municipality of roughly 32 million whose major city is located 200 miles from the epicenter of the May 12 earthquake.

One of the university presidents who’d planned to participate in the Fergus Falls trip could not attend due to the earthquake, Anderson said.

Before the delegation leaves Fergus Falls Thursday afternoon, they will tour the RTC and visit a handful of Minnesota and North Dakota schools, including MSCTC-Fergus Falls. An agreement with Hunan Province has already been made for Chinese students to enroll in the college’s nursing programs in the future. Student enrollment could begin as early as fall 2009.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

It's about time this community be proactive, and positive! I'm hopeful too! I took the kids during the public tour of the Kirkbride yesterday afternoon and it's gorgeous. This building needs to be saved.
