Orthopedist moving into Pizza Heaven
Published Thursday, May 29, 2008
An orthopedic center will take the place of what was formerly Pizza Heaven next to Barringer’s Coffee House on the northwest corner of Lincoln and Cascade in downtown Fergus Falls.
The space will be used by Dr. Gary Matthys, Fargo. He will use the orthopedic center for exams and minimal invasive joint surgery. Tentative plans call for the center to open in June.
A city permit allowed for remodeling the past several weeks to establish exam rooms and offices. The building is owned by Otter Properties.
Pizza Heaven closed in November 2007 after being a mainstay in Fergus Falls for 25 years. At that time, owner Kathy Haffley said the economy and business wasn’t what it used to be for the establishment. Increased competition in the food service business was another factor, Haffley said.
Last summer’s road construction also was detrimental to Pizza Heaven, even though Haffley and her staff knew the work was necessary.
Dana Barringer said it will be good for her coffee house to again have a neighbor in the adjacent quarters.
“It’s exciting to see the space (formerly used by Pizza Heaven) filled,” Barringer said. “The building itself also has been enhanced. We here at the coffee hose will benefit from this nice remodeling right next to us.”

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by killdeer (anonymous) on May 29, 2008 at 1:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

From what tomsmom said, I find it a little suspicious that he is moving downtown. It's a weird location for something like he is doing... You would think the hospital would hire him...

Hey cueball!: Have you actually had any medical contact with our orthopedic guys? Well I HAVE and they are both top drawer. They were reccomended to me when I first moved here by others in the medical field. Don't know what your beef is but just popping off without specifics is unfair. These docs did a knee for me and it was a WHOLE lot easier than the previous knee I had done in another place.
To repeat: the the best of my knowledge the two docs we have here are very highly regarded.

Oh my gosh! An orthopedist moving downtown? What next? An optometrist, a dentist, an insurance company? Next thing you know, there might be restaurants and furniture stores down there. What are we to do?
