It’s a work in progress for development of the two-mile Pelican River Trail designed for walkers and bike riders. The two-mile trail, when completed, will run from Prairie Lake north of Pelican Rapids, wind its way through downtown and end southwest of the community near the wetlands overlook.

Easements still are needed from area property owners. Working with the Pelican Rapids City Council and city park committee is consultant Gene Miller.

“Development of the trail takes a lot of time,” Pelican Rapids Mayor Wayne Runningen said Wednesday. “Gene and others have done a good job and the time has been well spent. But we still have much work ahead.”

City Administrator Don Solga said developing the easements will permit the city to accomplish segments of the trail.

“People from near and far will come and use the trail,” Park Chairman Mel Zierke said. “When completed, this will be a source of pride for the entire community.”

People already enjoy the beauty of the Pelican River, especially during the summer months when visitors come to Pelican Rapids to attend Art in the Park, Turkey Days and the International Friendship Festival. In the fall the city holds its annual Oktoberfest Fest. This summer the town also celebrates its 125th anniversary.

Completion of the river trail, according to Mayor Runningen, will be an additional major draw that will benefit the entire community.

Helping to make the proposed two-mile Pelican River Trail a reality for walkers and bike riders, late last year, were Cooper and Lisa Stewart who donated seven acres of land near Prairie Lake north of town. The land is just across the road from the public access.

Runningen said the land donation from the Stewarts was a big boost to the project.

“With the donation from the Stewarts, project leaders have in place the north anchor for the trail,” Zierke said. “The school easement provides for the south anchor.”

The proposed trail will not be for just walkers and bike riders. Also in the works is planning for Veterans Memorial River Park along the river, just north of where the Pelican Rapids Public Library is located. That will be a gathering place for parents with young children, senior citizens and others.

Runningen and Zierke also praise property owners Steve and Barb Backstrom who donated land for small parks and other uses along the trail.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
