Pitbulls attack pony, people
Published Monday, June 23, 2008
A local dog owner may face charges after two pitbulls attacked two people and a shetland pony over the weekend in Pelican Township.
According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, friends of the dogs’ owner were out for a walk with the animals when they bit a nearby pony, hanging from the animal’s neck. After the friends threw objects at the dogs to get them to let go, the animals turned on the people, biting a 17-year-old on the ankle and knocking a pregnant woman to the ground.
The juvenile was checked by Pelican Ambulance staff and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes by a private vehicle. The horse suffered severe puncture wounds to its neck and hind leg; the injuries appeared non-life threatening.
The dogs allegedly were not up to date on their vaccinations.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by Brandon (anonymous) on June 23, 2008 at 1:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The dog owner should face charges. He/she did not take proper care of the dogs through training or vaccinations. Sad! Hope those injured heal well!

Why weren't the dogs on leashes??? The whole incident could have been avoided by not allowing the dogs to act on their instincts to attack. Even with the best of training, many dogs go into chase or attack mode and block out all commands from the owner. I know it is more fun to walk a dog without a leash, but come on....all this could ahve been avoided.

How come it is always blamed on the dog? I know people that have pitbulls and they are the most loving animals as they were raised to be loved and with love. they weren't treated mean or trained to be mean. Even with a houseful of people they have been fine and want the attention and loving from everyone. Start looking at the training or none training that these animals are getting. Many dogs have been penned up or chained up and get no attention but yet they are at fault and not the owner (and that isn't just pitbulls either). Put blame where the blame belongs, when an animal is abused instead of trained you can know the difference.

I agree with you Laney, a pit bull can be a good dog if trained properly. However the problem is that Pit Bulls are aggresive, strong dogs and are seen by people (usually low life people who use the dogs as a power/control status symbols) and are taught to be mean. And it happens way too often, and unfortunately too many people are getting hurt. Not sure what the answer is, we can punish the owner, but by then someone has gotten hurt. A part of me thinks Pit Bulls should be outlawed, but these losers would just find another dog and teach it to be mean and aggressive.

I saw someone walking a dog in town during the summerfest with a muzzle.. Not only should aggressive dogs have them but so should people who force their opinions..

Just last week my sister in law and her husband were chased two times by the neighbors pitbull by Pelican Rapids, the sheriff was called out to make a report, and was called to the neighbors house for the same reason, same dog chased the lady into her house. I love dogs, all breeds, they all deserve a chance, but when a dog of any breed attacks anything, livestock, or human, something needs to be done with the animal, once they have started to be agressive towards other living things, it gets on a power trip, and won't stop. If they are with other dogs, they can also get the others to join in with them. Last summer on my sons 3rd birthday, our lab cross attacked our uncle, and had to be put down, he wasn't known for being aggressive, but we weren't takin the chance of him doing it again. What if it were a young child? Or some older person who can't kick them off of them. They have jaws that can bite with tons of pressure. All of you who are pro pitbull, you have the right to be, but if you got chased by one, or someone or something you knew was attacked by one, you just might be a little more understanding to those who don't like the breed. Everyone on this website,Don't jugde others for their opinions. It's only human to be scared of a dog or any animal, of any breed, if it is known for attacking.
