Dog bites postman, officer
Published Tuesday, June 24, 2008
A Fergus Falls man will receive a citation for a dangerous dog after his cocker spaniel bit first a postal carrier then a police officer.
According to Fergus Falls police, a postal carrier was delivering mail along the 1100 block of Mabelle Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Monday when a cocker spaniel belonging to Kristian Stanley Kristiansen ran across Kristiansen’s yard and bit the postal carrier on the calf as he stood near his vehicle.
The postal carrier later told police the dog is usually chained and he was waiting for the chain to catch.
After postmaster Brad Beck reported the incident to Fergus Falls police, an officer visiting Kristiansen’s residence was bitten by the same dog on the inside of his knee cap.
The officer took the cocker spaniel to the Humane Society and Kristiansen will receive a citation for a dangerous dog.
The dog is up-to-date on its vaccinations.

There are some dogs that just don't like people in unaforms.

imagine, and its not a pit bull or a rot. It seems the only time you hear about dog attacks and such is with the 2 kinds of dogs above. Other dogs are also dangerous, including yappy little cockers!!!! And it doesn't make a difference if people are in uniform. Any dog can do damage to a person or child.

Yippy little ankle biters will do just that bite your ankles and in this cockers case he preferred knees. It can be any dog that shows agression, my daughter was bit by a german shepard mutt when she was little. Its just the strength of the dogs that you mentioned intheknow. I witnessed two pit bulls being walked & another dog walked by on the street & this large grown man was being pulled by these dogs in an attempt to get at the other dog. When the dogs could not get at the passer-bys dog, they turned on the owner. Very scary to witness. I agree with what other people have said in that half the problem is with irresponsible owners & the dogs being seen as some sort of a status symbol...very sad.

You would have to search pretty hard to find a story where a cocker spaniel killed a person, but we have all heard stories of pit bulls killing people. I am not condoning the behavior of the cocker spaniel and it should be taken care of for the nuissance it has created, however, all you pro pitbull people cannot use this story as a defense of pitbulls. Yes all animals can turn, however, I'll take my chances with a cocker spaniel anyday over a pit.

Having dogs for family pets through the years including pits, rots and 1 cocker, would take a pit or rot anyday over the cocker. The cocker was mean nipped any and all people. That why it wasn't around for very long.

In most cases, dogs are only as bad as their owners make them/allow them to be. I have heard it said there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. It is up to us as the owners to teach our dogs right from wrong, just as we do with children, you don't expect a child to automatically know right from wrong so why is it that dogs are always blamed for the trouble they cause? If your child runs wildly around your house you stop them and help them understand that running and screaming is for outside and not the living room. But if a dog does the same thing, they get reprimanded, banned to being an outside dog or locked in a kennel somewhere whenever it is inside or even dropped off at a shelter. Experts have found behavior problems to be the number one cause of relinquishment to shelters and the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age. Why is it we expect our animals to automatically know right from wrong but not our children?

For the record, a study was done and showed that the most aggressive dog breed today is the cocker spaniel (not a rotti, not a pit bull). They are being overbred and bloodlines are crossing, causing odd temperments in these dogs (go to www.dogbreedinfo.com for more about cocker spaniels). The study tested thousands of different dog breeds and found that 4 out of 10 cocker spaniels are likely to attack humans (pit bulls were 10th on this list of most likely to attack). You just rarely hear about a cocker spaniel attack because they don't cause as much damage as a pit bull might. 10 cocker spaniels would have to attack before 1 pit bull attacks... Go ahead parents, go to the puppy store and pick out a cute cocker spaniel from a puppy mill, take it home and let your infant and toddler play with it. The cocker spaniel is more likely to eat the baby than a pit bull.
