Is it snow?
Cottonwood seeds falling on area
Published Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Snow in summer? While anything is possible is northern Minnesota, the presence of snow-like white specks covering cars is actually an indication that summer has arrived.
The white flakes are remnants of blooming seeds on Willow, Cottonwood and Popal Trees.
During the beginning of summer, the trees begin to shed their seeds as a natural way of reproduction.
Seeds are transferred wherever the wind blows them, and in some cases, their journey ends with the germination of a new tree that will one day continue the cycle.
Their peak blooming season only lasts a couple of weeks, but seeds generally float around throughout the summer until they land on the ground and are imbedded in the dirt.
And although the scene may look pretty through a window, the flakes can be a nuisance. Seeds are known to clog up air conditioners and screens, said West Otter Tail County gardener, Bev Johnson.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by ginger_ale1 (anonymous) on June 25, 2008 at 6:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

C'mon, ginger_ale, give the Journal a break. It may be boring to you but what about some grade school kid checking out the Journal? You think she/he understands the world news and business page? Or even gives a rip about it? Something like this teaches someone something. (But, if they're going to name off trees, I've never heard of a "Popal" tree. I think they meant Poplar tree. But who cares)? The info got out. Don't be too critical. At least you have a "local" newspaper. If they decided to quit publishing, think about what you might not get to read about. Everybody has a certain section they go to, all other stuff is just stuff to them. It's not the Philidelphia Enquire or the NY Times, it's your local newspaper. Let them do their job and be glad they report the local news and happenings in your area. If they went out of business, who would print the local news the way you're used to getting it?
They may not be the Trib or the NY Times, but they get your local news to you and other 'down-home' stuff too. And that's something you don't get in metro areas.

I agree with Flashbang...
If I want the big headlines, I go to online news like cnn or fox
There is nothing wrong with a news story about cotton wood trees. Someone that was unaware might be interested.
And you are right... I believe it is poplar trees.

your both wrong. they are popal trees, whether you have heard of them or not. if your going to pick a story apart over spelling be sure its mispelled or youll look like an idiot, like a couple of the posters above

i also agree with Flashbang.
While the DJ might not have the attention grabbing massive chaos and gore of the big papers, it deserves it's place. i feel that the DJ mimics the pace of life around this area. what's wrong with a story on annoying fuzzy things? at least it's not a sad story about someone being injured or killed. i choose to live here because we do have a lot of "Minnesota Nice" and not so much violence. thanks DJ for reinforcing my sense of security with your vanilla stories :)

Hey, localfisherman, I wasn't picking the story apart. I said I never heard of them and if there was such a tree, so be it, and I guess there is and that's good. To me it looked more like a mispell of poplar. I'm sure you've been wrong a couple times in your life like all of us. I'm not going after anyone, just having fun chiming in on some of these posts. No need to get your knickers in a knot over nothing. The only time to get upset is if your line breaks and your wall hanger was on the other end. That is a good reason. And, one last thing; how's the fishing back in MN these days? I'd like to see the DJ post some area fish stories. I like reading about who's catching what, where. It's one of the things I miss about MN. My apologies to all for straying off the topic.
