Open house planned at Ashby’s newest assisted living facility
Published Thursday, July 10, 2008
Northwoods of Ashby, a newly-built assisted living facility in Ashby, will conduct an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Northwoods director Bonnie Norgren reiterates that Ashby takes pride in honoring and valuing its aging citizens by offering an entire continuum of care.
“Residents who will live in Northwoods will be able to maintain their ties to Ashby, continue their involvement in their social activities, enhance their relationships with their families and be encouraged to exercise as much independence as possible,” Norgren said.
Building the new facility is expected to provide for 10 new jobs for the Ashby community. Northwoods will be staffed 24 hours a day.
This project came about from a desire by Ashby City Council member Lynn Jensen. She thought that Ashby could use the type of facility that will now become a reality at Northwoods.
When this project was in the discussion stage, Jensen contacted a mutual acquaintance in the construction business. That person had a connection with a former Fergus Falls resident, Del Sand, who owns an assisted living center in LeSeuer and centers in some other towns in Minnesota.
Sand agreed that a facility in Ashby was in order and named Norgren as manager. Norgren, an Ashby native, worked for Sand as the director of a mental health treatment center for adults in Alexandria.
There will be 16 units in all at Northwoods of Ashby — eight single apartments and eight 2-bedroom apartments.
Full capacity will be 24 to 26 people, depending on how some people wish to utilize the one- and two-bedroom units.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by frankenfurter (anonymous) on July 10, 2008 at 3:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)
If they're serving creamed corn and ham with taster's choice, consider me as good as there.

ashby has always been an area lacking spark...in need of a catalyst for change and youthful enthusiasm. JACKPOT!! as long as the police can keep down the party noise emanating from this assisted living facility (aka "Party Central"), and keep the inmates from running wild, this will be just what the doctor ordered.
i second frankenfurter's excitement and will join him in this creamed corn feast!

In response to FruitSack's comment about Ashby lacking spark. Obviously you haven't visited Ashby much. I was born and raised in Evansville and live in the Ashby area. This town amazes me the way it's citizens supports it's businesses and each other. It is a very busy little town with great people who have a great deal of "spark" and I am sure I have many who will agree with me. Ashby is a "we can do it" kind of town.
