Italian restaurant eyes downtown

Published Thursday, July 17, 2008

Italian restaurant Bello Cucina is set to open in downtown Fergus Falls this August. Jason Mueller, the restaurant’s owner, says plans are currently in the works to finalize the purchase agreements. Because of a confidentiality agreement, Mueller would not disclose the restaurant’s new location.

A city official who asked not to be identified said there was reason to suspect that Bello Cucina would replace Jazzy Fox Bistro.

When asked if the Jazzy Fox Bistro will be replaced with Bello Cucina, Jazzy Fox owner Ted O’Connell said he could not comment because of a confidentiality agreement.

If things go according to plans, the restaurant will open to the public sometime during the first two weeks of August.

The restaurant, which currently has a location in Morris, will serve authentic Italian foods with menu choices ranging from soups, salads, pizzas and calzones to pastas, authentic entrées and deserts. Menus will also include a wide variety of wine, martinis and beer.

Mueller, who is also the head chef, says menu items will vary slightly depending on the season. During fall and winter, Mueller tends to put more hearty dinners on the menu. In the summer, more fresh caught fish and locally grown produce will be incorporated.

Is the Jazzy Fox closed? It is not clear in the article. I was unsuccessful in finding their website on a google search.

Jason Mueller was a partner in opening Cafe Bella in Glenwood, then they opened the Bellas on Broad in Alex, if this is another one similar to those it will be awesome, I think. Both the Glenwood and Alex Bellas are a great place to eat, and the atmosphere is so neat as well. Will be looking forward to checking this out.

It'll be good to have a little more restaurant variety in town. Now that Speedway has re-opened that will help even more. I wonder where all the hoity-toities are going to eat when the Fox shuts down. Hopefully Bella doesn't push all the average income folks out the door too by overpricing everything.

It is interesting to read the comments of "Newshound" in regard to the Jazzy Fox Bistro as it is another clear indication of the endemic problems we have here in Fergus Falls. First, the Jazzy Fox was not expensive by any measure and certainly when compared with other fine dining restaurants in the region, for example Montes in Fargo which is has ambiance and a menu very much like the Jazzy Fox sells their NY Strip for $27 and the Fox sells theirs for $18, while the Salmon at Monte's is $24 and the Salmon at The Jazzy Fox is $17. So the statement that the Jazzy Fox is over priced and expensive is absolutely absurd and just shows that there is a underlying lack of culinary knowledge that is rampant in this town.

I have always enjoyed my meals at the Jazzy Fox and we especially enjoyed the piano music and the fact that we were never rushed to finish our meal and leave.

So, take a large dose of under-educated, add a dash of geographical isolation and a splash of audacity and you have Fergus Falls. Remember what the Jazzy Fox was for this town when you cannot recruit doctors and businesses, when the best job in town still only pays $12.00 and hour and wealthy business owners no longer visit or look to move to Fergus Falls...then you might understand the value that a fine dining restaurant has on the health and financial vitality of the region. So to "Sumwun" the hoity-toities will take their business elsewhere to towns like Alexandria, Fargo, DL or Perham where they will also take their businesses and create new jobs...we certainly don't want any wealthy, educated folks in Fergus Falls...do we..???

Lastly, I hope Newshound learns to use spell check in the future...especially since a "Viola" is a musical instrument and certainly not the word "Voila" which means "to exclaim"..and in the English Language conjunctions such as "of" are commonly used in phrases to make sense of the words "serving" and "pretension"....!!

So, to the Judge and Jury...I rest my case.

Mmmmmmm I love italian! Hope this works out. Fergus needs a little variety.

We've only dined at the Jazzy Fox on one occasion and I didn't feel they were that overpriced. They were a fine dining establishment. What do you expect; dollar burgers? Of course they were expensive compared to the other restaurants in Fergus Falls. Hopefully Bello's will offer the same atmosphere and I'm sure they will do just fine.

WOW FF_Busunessman!
Absolutely NOTHING more has to be said!
Here is the Typical Fergus Businessman, it's all true!
They are living up to the reputation!
WOW!

Dear "FungusAmugus" or is that supposed to be "FungusAmungus" which would actualy make more sense and actually Rhyme but I figure that would require another 5 years of education.

Anyway, I would debate you but....Father always said...."Never have a battle of wits with an unarmed man"

So I will pass....!!!

If and when Jazzy Fox goes out of business it won’t be because of their prices, but because of their arrogant attitude and phony pretensions. I will always remember when they opened and announced that we should “save your blue jeans for the beach” (but dress up for the Fox) If there was one element of substance in that eating establishment I missed it on the one occasion I ate there.

Hey "andtongs" maybe with the Jazzy Fox having the only wood-fired brick oven in Fergus Falls might have been something you missed on that one visit...or maybe you missed this in the Fargo Forum.

http://www.in-forum.com/ValleyRR/article...

Or maybe you just missed the fact that there isn't any other restaurant in Fergus Falls where you can dress up and feel comfortable...but that is reserved for pretentious people..you know...the kind of people who invest and create jobs.

Posted by chrreed (anonymous) on July 17, 2008 at 9:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Maybe the reason that people think that the Jazzy Fox is so expensive is because most of the jobs in this town only pay slightly above minimum wage! Most of us cannot afford to eat there especially if we have a family to feed.

Sounds like mr businessman is probably tied into the place somehow, otherwise why get so defensive over a soon defunct restaurant? Obviously its not what people are looking for if its shutting down. Hopefully Bella is somewhere in the middle as far as price range goes so people who dont have as much money as mr ffbusinessman can afford to eat there too.

Posted by E_85 (anonymous) on July 17, 2008 at 10:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well Mr. FFBM, apparently you havent been to DL or Perham lately, cause they are closing business' there. Its not like business leaving Fergus is anything new, and I really doubt it is because of its lack of fine dining. Fergus is a hard working community, by hard working I mean physical guessing you nothing of labor intense. Therefore the ones who make the kind of money to be able to eat at JF would never dream of getting dressed up just to eat a steak. Plus the ones who invest to create jobs in this community are those same hard working, come home dirty, and do it again tomorrow people.

What would us undereducated, ignorant, geographically challenged, Fergus Fallsites know of wood fired brick ovens anyway. All we deserve are the crumbs that fall from the table of the uberwealthy or maybe a few coins tossed at our feet as the businessman leaves the JFB, on his way to creating wealth and jobs, after a robust meal and some stimulating conversation with other benefactors of mankind. Oh thank you Mr. Businessman for just allowing us to stand on the curb outside or perhaps gaze through the window as you devour another plate of wood fired lobster, heaven know you deserve it for all you have done for us poor folks.

if Bello Cucina is not a buffet, it will fail
because Fergus people only like to eat large quantities of Cheap food

Bello Cucina will definitely prosper in FF. I have been to the one in Morris about 4 times while visiting my brother & sister-in-law whom went to college there for the last 4 yrs. The prices are avg. or reasonable and the food is always excellent.
The service at that particular location has been less than expected on at least one occasion, but you can get that anywhere (kind of depends on the wait staff itself). All in all, the price is good and the food is excellent!! It's kind of like Johnny Carino's X2 (a step up from Olive Garden for those not familiar). Equal quality food, with seemingly a bit more authenticity. As for the Jazzy Fox I cannot comment as I have never visited. Thought about it several times but passed for various reasons I guess. For those concerned about getting all fancied up and going out to feel comfortable........ Go to The Spot and have a glass of wine and a Panini if they ever open up???? Or hey , remember there is always a nice dinner to be had at Mabel's.
WELCOME BELLO CUCINA!!!!!
I CAN'T WAIT TO DINE WITH YOU AGAIN AS I NO LONGER HAVE A REASON TO GO TO MORRIS SINCE THE IN-LAWS HAVE MOVED ON.

Well done Fergus Falls Businessman. However I do not recall saying anything about the prices. I did not notice so therefore they apparently were not out of line.
And you'll have to trust me here-I DO know fine dining and have enjoyed it in many near and distant places. . Not in the Jazzy Fox. And I think Fergus Falls is a marvelous town.
But by golly I don't know my violas from my vidalias do I!!

WOW!!!!! You people in Fergus don't know a good restaurant when you see one. The Jazzy Fox was the ONLY decent place in town to enjoy a good meal. Just because we live in podunk nowhere Otter Tail County doesn't mean we should have to go without an elegant dining experience if that's what we want. This place is so culturally behind the times it's laughable. Have any of you mouthing off about how overpriced and pretentious the Jazzy Fox ever eaten out in a nice restaurant anywhere other than Fergus Falls? Try having a nice steak dinner or Sunday brunch anywhere in a real city and see how much you pay and watch the people roll their eyes at your as you saunter in in your tacky Budweiser t-shirts, ripped jeans and flip flops. Man, I always knew Fergus was the center of backwards, tightwad farmers and this just proves it! Good luck, Bella. With a crowd like this, you'll need it.

I have eaten at the JF a couple times. Wasn't bad at all and I think it is fairly obvious that it isn't a "jeans and t-shirt" kind of place.

That being said if JF is being replaced by Bella it isn't happening because the JF owners are just making too much money and they can't spend it all so they are retiring.
I would have to assume that it just wasn't doing that well. It may be they were too expensive, or didn't cater to enough people, or that some people were scared off by the word Bistro or a hundred other different things, who knows it is probably a combination of many factors.

Seems to me we should just move forward and welcome Bella with open arms. I for one can't wait for some good italian food that I don't have to make myself!

Buying a basic meal at the Jazzy Fox doesn't cost anymore than a basic meal at Applebee's and I don't hear people complaining about Applebee's prices!

The Jazzy Fox is a great place. I'll never understand all this complaining I've heard about it over the years as over priced and pretentious. Obviously those complaining about it had their own expectations that weren't met when they entered the place or basing their opinion on second hand information. In my experience there I had great food and service all the while in a nice atmosphere with some great music. As other's have noted the prices were directly comparable to Applebee's or Ten Mile Steakhouse, with each having their own feeling as you dine. A night out at the JFB isn't just about eating, it's about enjoying the evening in a nice setting with no rush or huge crowds to shout over. If JFB is closing it will be missed, but I do look forward to having an Italian restaurant with the reputation that Bello's has.

I have to agree with mccain. make it a 'pasta buffet' where we can stuff our faces and leave no tip, and they will have a goldmine!!

Posted by melindakay (anonymous) on July 18, 2008 at 11:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It's unfortunate that just because a restaurant looks nicer than usual, so many residents of FF think it's expensive and pretentious. I had my wedding dinner at The Jazzy Fox and it was wonderful. They surprised us by having a saxophone and piano player there as well, and were very accommodating. Compared to nice restaurants basically anywhere else, their prices were inexpensive, and the food is great.
This seems to be another case of people being afraid of what they don't know... which seems to be a big issue in FF.

The real news here is that the JF is on its way out. So what is coming in its place? Bello Cucina, Maybe, looking at there web-site they seem to have great looking food if you check out the Gallerie, as for Pricing we drove down to morris to check it out it only 50 min. The food was priced well especially in today's economy, large portions, nice presentation and it didn't seem to matter whether we were wearing blue jeans our a suit. The food was served quickly, and the TASTE OMG!!! My concern now is that the JF might not be big enough, or I bet you'll need to make reservations to get in on the weekends for sure! They take Reservations also. It also looked as if they do CATERING, and there is no-where in Fergus the does anymore.....

I will be happy to say goodbye to JF for a hopefully more friendly restraunt...especially italian. Yum! My experience with the JF has not been due to their prices, but the service I've recieved. I went to by a gift certificate and the they flatly refused to sell me one. She told me they were too busy to sell me one (there were only two tables sat...you don't have to be a waitress to know that is not busy, but if you did, I'd know). Who refuses to take money? Needless to say, my money went elsewhere. Anyway, so thrilled to hear of a new restaurant coming to town!
