5 people injured in Detroit Lakes
Published Sunday, July 20, 2008
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (AP) — An accident during the Detroit Lakes Water Carnival Parade sends five people to the hospital Sunday afternoon.
A go-kart that was traveling in the parade flipped and went into the crowd. The injured include four children and one adult.
Police Chief Kel Kenna says the injuries aren't life-threatening.
The driver of the go-kart was driving for the El-Zagal Shrine Club. The driver wasn't hurt and submitted to an alcohol test, but police don't believe alcohol was involved. Police think the go-kart's accelerator got stuck.

I hate to say this....but I was afraid something like that would happen eventually with those go-karts. It was a matter of time. Im glad it wasnt worse then it was. I praise the Shriners for all they do and have no heartache with them. Its just a safety thing Im concerned about.

I really dont think that the go carts or any of the various things they drive should be raced around as they do now. I saw a guy tip over a big motorcycle onto the sidewalk when they used to use them in the same manner as the go carts in parades. I am scared to death of them & I take myself and my kids a ways back because you just dont know & with the speeds they get up to its is just a horrible accident waiting to happen as this story shows.
This doesnt come into play with this story, but parents also need to KEEP THEIR KIDS IN CHECK during parades & not let them run free into the street. I was in a unit in the Erhard parade & we were told that on the first corner of the parade route we could not throw candy out because the kids were being allowed to run towards the units even after the parents had been told to keep them back.

This kinda of thing happens and will happen as long as there are people who show up to events like this involving any activity. Keep in mind the percentages though, and of all the thousands that show up to these parades over the years, how many are seriously injured? We have to assume some risk as a audience/spectator involving anything more than a chess tournament. Also, I do agree with others about the parents not keeping their children behind barriers. They are there for a reason, is your childs safety worth less tahn a piece of candy? Do your job.
