District to bring back teachers

Published Thursday, July 24, 2008

Three months after the Fergus Falls School District announced teacher cuts, Superintendent Jerry Ness is assuring community members that 17.3 new teaching positions will be filled for the 2008-09 school year.

When the district announced teacher cuts in April, Ness informed the community that at least 11 teachers placed on unrequested leave were more than likely to be asked back for the 2008-09 school year. Because of retirements and grants, the district is now able to offer more positions.

The district currently has no concrete list set in place nor have they offered jobs for all of the 17.3 positions. Final names and positions will be listed and announced at an August 11 school board meeting.

Some of the teachers placed on unrequested leave of absence have found jobs with surrounding districts, including Breckenridge and West Central Area Schools.

Teachers who are more than likely to be asked to return have been given a heads-up by school principals, Ness said.

Teachers hired back are not necessarily taking over previous positions, Ness said, and will more than likely fill a different position within their specific department.
