17-year-old dies at 10,000 Lakes Festival
Published Friday, July 25, 2008
DETROIT LAKES — For the second year in a row, a person has died during the 10,000 Lakes music festival near Detroit Lakes.
Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon says a 17-year-old Wisconsin girl was found dead at her campsite late Friday morning. Foul play is not suspected, but an autopsy is planned. Her name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The sheriff says no other information will be released until the investigation is complete.
Last year, two men died of drug overdoses at the jam band festival.

That is sad .... what a young age to die and what a place to die at.
One question though - why was a 17 yr old there???

this is 10k lakes. why are people doing hard core drugs at a jam band fest? you can't overdose on weed and mushrooms. anyone doing smack, crack, and meth has a death wish. hopefully the old frightened powers that be wont shut down yet another activity because of a few people that haven't figured it out.

I would imagine that alcohol poisoning would be clasified as a drug overdose. That seems more feasable at 10klf than some other things, however, I have known some hippies that were into some pretty crazy things...

If you've ever talked to anyone who works up at the 10K fest, they'll tell you its more than just weed and mushrooms. People come from all over the country to peddle heroine, cocaine, and meth at this concert, just because they know the customers are there. Every year some youngster(s) die of an overdose at this thing. Yeah, they should know better than to be doing drugs to begin with, but the county continues to promote this event, and all anyone is looking to do is go up there and get stoned for a few days. WEFest has been going on forever, and you don't see being OD'ing there.

Sumwun, what have you been smoking?
people have died at wefest and there has been more than plenty of drugs there too.
should we no longer endorse fergus falls because there has been drug related deaths in our city?
I thought the main purpose of 10k lakes fest had to do with the bands everyone that attends pays a fairly high amount to see.

This is very sad. This is someone's little girl. I do not think people should be allowed to comment when someone passes like this... Look at your comments. Horrible! It really does not matter how she died... she died and the family deserves your respect and prayers.

I think that the drug comments are about the 2 people that died last year, ffmom. I do not see anywhere that anyone said anything about the 17yo doing drugs. The only comments that I can tell are about the young lady are the ones that comment about her parents letting her go. Let's not start bickering over this, too.

ok people, what are we camparing 10klf and wefest togather, the mass amounts of alcohol being consumed at wefest are simular to the amounts of drugs at 10k. in either case there is stuff happening that shuldent be. yes, there are people overdosing at 10klf...in my opinion it is there own fault, if your going to do drugs, know your limits. and this young girl may have not overdosed on street drugs like heroin and smack, it may have been alcohol..last i read no one new. wefest is not in any way better than 10k, there has been rape cases, alcohol poisioning, various acts of vandelism, why does no one complain about wefest?? ...becouse its not drugs, drinking is socialy acceptable so we all just put aside the alcohol poising (which is a form of overdosing) Seriously it all disgusts me. these are music festivals, places to go have fun listen to music, find new friends and if you cant handle your own self, you shuldent be attending them. I understand this young girls parents being upset, but honestly i think no one else has a reason to be getting upset with 10klf. If you ever went there you wuld know what i was saying, its not a drug fest, it is a music fest and everyone needs to remember that!!!!!!

I work both festivals 10k and wefest and I will tell you people that go to the 10k festival are alot more sweeter and nicer then those that go to the wefest. yes there is alot of drugs involve at 10k. This girl died of a overdose of street drugs and medications she was taking and also there was alcohol involve. But this was a young life taken tooooo soon. God bless her parents. Wefest does having alot of problems with drinking and fighting and me being employed there I get to hear alot about what happens. I have said my peace for now.
