Teacher training improving skills
Published Saturday, August 2, 2008
Teachers from Fergus Falls and surrounding areas are moving one step closer to an improved state-wide math and science teaching structure.
Monday marks the launch of the Math and Science Teacher Academy at Lakes Services Cooperative in Fergus Falls.
Fergus Falls is one of the nine sites chosen by the Department of Education to host programs designed to provide teachers with innovative styles of teaching for math and science subjects.
The one-week seminar will challenge teachers to look at their own classroom data and implement goals for improvement. At this point, some 50 students from Fergus Falls and surrounding communities are set to attend.
A visit from assistant commissioner Karen Klinzing is on Monday’s agenda. Klinzing will address the importance of the new state-wide program and discuss goals for the future.
The week-long seminar is one of many to be hosted throughout the next two years.
The implementation of the program is due in part to the new math curriculum set for 2015. At that time, eighth grade students will be required to take Algebra 1.
The legislature’s bi-annual budget included $3 million in funding over the course of two years for the Academy.
In addition, the National Governors Association awarded the Academy with a $500,000 grant. Teachers are not responsible for tuition payments for the Academy.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by Timray18 (anonymous) on August 3, 2008 at 10:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)
A welcomed move in the arena of science and math....
