Our fair city isn’t looking so fair anymore
Published Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Our fair city isn’t looking so fair these summer days.
How many people who drive by the George B. Wright statue on South Union have noticed the “Weed Garden” at that park?
In the past, a person would observe crews of workers planting, weeding and caring for flower beds there. Not so many years ago travelers from out-of-state would pull over and get out of their vehicles to view the impressive sights of those flowers. One can only ask “WHAT HAPPENED”?
The same holds true for another attraction in our community. Lake Alice has never looked so unkept. There are thistles three feet high and the lakeshore has not been trimmed. Does anybody care? It would surprise me if nobody else has not noticed... these places are no longer attractive!
If the city is unable (for whatever reason) to plant annuals as they used to, it would look better if workers would cut the weeds down, or another alternative would be to plant grass in those places. If city budget money is an issue, perhaps a group of volunteers could be recruited to help make these two parks beautiful once again.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by toad3 (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 1:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)
too much money for the golf course and the Pebble Lake pumping, no money for beautification of the city.

Well at least the Werners are happy. Lower their lake (at taxpayer expense) and oppose rezoning to control the neighborhood. Maybe the rest of us could stop by and enjoy it also.

Remember when Butch, the Parks Director, worked for the City? He started growing seeds in January for the City flower beds. The City always looked so good. But then the Administrator got a "mad on" for Butch and Butch was fired. I wonder where the City gets their bedding plants now?

I've been told the church across the street from the weed garden "adopted" it's care from the city. I don't know how much truth there is to it, but figured I'd throw it out there.
As for Lake Alice -- how about doing something about the cormorants and storky-looking egrets that are obviously taking over? I could care less about flower beds.

It's really discusting, the way Lake Alice looks. A while back there was a comment about "no-mow" --is that what the City is doing? If so, it's crappy. We haven't had good park directors since Bernie Pretts and Butch Benson. All around town the pretty is gone. All the business's will have to change their ads because it not "beautiful Fergus Falls"

It's sad to see the decline in the landscaping. Parks are for everyone's enjoyment, and add so much to our town.
The egrets , etc at Lake Alice concern me less than the deplorable water quality. How many times do we read they are expending public funds for some study, and then that is the end of it?

Why not take some of the fine citizens that are living at tax payer expense in the OTCJ and put them to work on projects such as Lake Alice?

To add to the crappy areas around town, The river walk is disgusting also. I used to enjoy taking my dogs for a walk around Lake Alice, but the place is a pit..
The whole town is quite an embarrassment.

Of course we must realize how the trash happened to be laying along the bank of the river, lakes, and roads. The geese don't use many candy wrappers, coke bottles, paper cups etc. Dumping trash, including cigarette butts, anywhere except a trash recepticle shows how ignorant, irresponsible, and lazy people can be.

I think they really need to fix up the riverwalk, especially under the bridges. Do it for the town drunks that hang out down there all day, the kids who sneak down there and smoke pot, and the ones who keep spray painting everything down there. They need a nicer hang out.

O.K., now that all of you have bitched about it, I'll wait back and see if any of you does anything about it. "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem"

Where would you start?

Someone should write a letter to the editor anouncing a time to meet, and everyone can bring their friends and help clean up the city. There were lots of people posting so there is obviously an interest. Tell me a time and place and I will try to be there!
