Edwards versus McCain

Published Thursday, August 14, 2008

If you turned on Fox News this weekend, you couldn’t miss coverage of the admission Friday by former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards that he had an extramarital affair on the campaign trail in 2006 while his wife was stricken with cancer.

Flip through the channels and you heard this talking head and that talking head saying how his political career is over.

And they are right. It is.

But there remains one question: Is what he did worse than what presumed Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain did?

McCain has admitted to several affairs during his first marriage — to a woman who had remained loyal to him during his years in captivity in Vietnam.

Edwards had one instance of adulterous behavior. McCain had years of adulterous behavior. He eventually left his wife for a younger woman.

We’re not saying what Edwards did was right. It was not. And the fact that he was in the national limelight at the time of the affair — when so many Americans were reaching out to his suffering family — makes the affair seem like a lie to the American people. But we nevertheless find it difficult to skewer one politician over adultery without being “fair and balanced” to another politician who is still in the running for the highest office in the land.

If faithfulness in marriage has become a values test for political office and especially the presidency, then it isn’t hard to compare Sen. McCain to Sen. Barack Obama and decide who is the adulterer.

if nothing else this shows how Sen. McCain repays those who would stand with him in times of trouble.

either way, the adulterous behavior of these people, should be more of concern to their families and spouses than to us.

What concerns me more, is the willingness to continue a unfounded and unprovoked war, because some in power refuse to admit they lied!

Is it true that if elected Al Franken is going to teach "Tax Evasion Tactics for Politicians" in Washington? Seems to me the powers that be are the democrats and they voted for the war.

McCain's involvement in the Keating Five scandal should be front and center. He left his first wife after several affairs and after she was involved in a serious accident that left her permanently disfigured. Dumped her for a million heiress who could provide him with what he wanted. Money and power. At least the heiress was smart enough to make him sign a prenuptual agreement else he'd be off somewhere on his third or fourth marriage. I'm not sure what is worse. His temper and lack of respect for family or anyone else who might dare disagree with him or his obvious lack of moral character. I guess moral character isn't important in a president in america anymore.

Jerry, seems to me our Paul Wellstone, voted "NO", and was very vocal about his opposition to this war, and of course died under questionable circumstances immediately after Mr. Bush announced, "if you are not with us you are against us"!

Why does John Edwards' behavior drudge up conjecture about John McCain or anyone else? The days of JFK are gone, when a man could disrespect his wife and family while the press knowingly looked the other way. Very few candidate's lives could stand up under this microscope. The fact that JE still can't tell the truth about his own behavior is what's so disgusting to me.

I thinks it's really interesting that not one major news source was willing to cover this. Not MSNBC or CNN (communist news network). Then when it came to light via the National Inquirer and the internet then all the dems wanted to do was make excuses and bash Mccain's character. John Edwards lost the last presidential bid because he never showed up to work or vote in his home state. If you need the stats I have them. Anyway, The media is so slanted to the left that it's almost comical. I know that if this has been Mccain he would have been eaten alive by the press but in Sen. Edwards case not a word went out when this was found out. Give me a break, the dems are always crying about fair and balanced in the media IE:FOX NEWS but when it's any other media then it's fair and balanced....PUUU LEEZ.

Talk about typical - liberals preach tolerance, EXCEPT when someone doesn't believe the same thing as they do. If you want to talk about pure evil, take a look at the ACLU. Hyprocrites who stand up for the right to free speech and equality, unless you're middle class, white or Christian. Liberals are glad to perpetuate stereotypes regarding those who don't agree with them, including calling us fascists and followers of pornography? WTF? Talk about extreme!

Someone needs to take a pill with their mgdbottled.

duchess,
I highly suggest you actually do some research on the ACLU, because your statements are just not supported by the facts. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Oh please! Typical conservative talking points "the media is too left wing". Blame it on the media. I think the media is too right wing. I also think that the Fox ie; Fascist New Channel does not represent america. I blocked that channel. It's pure pornography. Nothing I'd want my grandchildren exposed to. We already have way too many fascists in this country. Hannity, O'Reilly, and that big mouthed drug addicted radio host Rush Limbo nut job and all those who agree with them. Fascism is right wing to the extreme. Just like these characters and most of their followers.

Why would anyone watch Fox News? Studies show that viewers of Fox News tend to be misinformed. Check this out-- http://foxattacks.com/virus/?utm_source=...

We watch Fox News because we can. I am sure that if I wanted to waste my time I could find articles, surveys, etc. to support a statement that viewers of CNN, MSNBC, and any other news network are misinformed as well. That seems to be the charge of the media these days - misinformation.

If we're talking about valuing a marriage...didn't President Bill Clinton have an extra marital affair with Monica Lewinsky...even doing things such as sticking a cigar in her vagina and then proceeding to stick the cigar in his mouth, commenting that it tasted good? Pretty sad. None of them are anything to look up to. Not the republicans or the dems. And to Jamie Cooper...There's an old saying, it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool than to open it and prove them right.

Posted by metasonics (anonymous) on August 15, 2008 at 12:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

well, if you don't like the misinformation assault we are now in the midst of, perhaps You should have done something when Mr. Powell decided to allow a couple of guys take buy up every major news source for our nation?, what a brilliant move to allow an Australian (Rupert Murdoch), to control America's flow of information.
I suppose his FOX news must have nothing of greater concern than the well being of us foreigners.
obviously foreigners, would value our people over massive profits.
much more reliable than say, an American like "Ted Turner"
and here I thought republicans were nationalists?
remember the protesters saying "deregulation of mass communication is the death of democracy"?

Woodtick
as for Bush Killing Mr. Wellstone?
I didn't say he did!
I was pointing out that some Democrats voted against the war in response to Jerry's post saying "Seems to me the powers that be are the democrats and they voted for the war."

I said,
"Jerry, seems to me our Paul Wellstone, voted "NO", and was very vocal about his opposition to this war, and of course died under questionable circumstances immediately after Mr. Bush announced, "if you are not with us you are against us"

I didn't say Bush killed Wellstone, but you've got a good point there, I wonder if those events could be connected?
strange how history has shown Wellstone was correct when he said he didn't believe there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and then demanded actual proof before he would support going to war.
we now have senate reports proving Bush and his cabinet deliberately lied to us specifically about those same weapons to get us into a war with Iraq.
which has cost over 100,000 lives.

I suppose to suggest taking the life of one more to keep ones misinformation agenda going long enough to succeed in ones endeavor would be totally out of line.
but very interesting theory you have suggested Woodtick

voice_of_reason, I find it strange that you suggest it would be better to maintain a code of silence rather than to openly discuss issues, suggesting that I am fool for opening my mouth.

why do so many republicans endorse the same Modus operandi as organized crime?
I heard rapists threaten their victims to remain silent also.

and yeah Clinton messed around, Edwards messed around, so did MCcain, who also wants our family and friends to continue to fight in an unprovoked war, for however long it takes, no matter the loss of life, to achieve, what again?

thanks

Thanks for the comments Cooper!!! Everytime you blog you lose potential votes. The Iraq war costing us over 100,000 lives? Are you really that ignorant, or just out of touch? So now Iraq is deadlier than Vietnam? You better get your facts straight before blogging. Seems you have a habit of taking your opinion as fact without the source to back it up.

So what have your loyal dems done for you? After all its you who claims to be unemployed, father of four, (with only one thats with you) and a dear handicapped boy. (your best work so far) And poor. So are you just seeking bettter programs from those that actually work for a living.

How many times have you been married? Where is Denise these days, anyway?

I love that bumper sticker on N Union. "annoy a liberal, work hard, be productive and enjoy life"

Seems once again, Mr cooper you have missed your audience with your ignorance.

Your so against our service men. How many years have you served?

Did you forget this is a volunteer army?
And yes, in case your wondering.
I was in service 87-95. 1st/94th Id Red Bull.

Did you forget that Saddam was a butcher? Would it be okay with you if we decided not to liberate the concentration camps as well? Is the killing of innocents okay with you? For one who wants to quote the genocide of China I find this a contradiction.

You simply repulse me with your pretentiousness. You better get an education before you start acting like you know whats going on. Oh Im sure your waiting for the government to pay for that through our taxes as well.

shunka,
is Wikipedia and the many reputable sources gathered there, accurate enough for you?
follow this link and add up the numbers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_...

I'm not against our military, I feel our vets and current soldiers deserve our respect and honor, which is why I don't feel it is right to send you to this war, and I would like to see our people return to their families, and I would like to see ol Bush pay them what they were promised, and ensure all vets are getting the best healthcare or at least as good of healthcare as our leaders are!

what is our mission in Iraq?
What would be considered victory?

my most recent job was filming the little league championships for an event called "big Friday"
I may not have steady work right now, but I am doing what I can, in fact I am campagning to do a job!

as far as what my loyal Dems have done for me?
who are you talking about?, Paul Wellstone?
He's dead, I guess I've met Colin Peterson too, but so what?
I'll tell you what they didn't do.
they didn't lie to the entire world to get us into the first unprovoked war in our history.
they didn't send you off to a foreign land without an exit strategy or determining what constitutes victory.

I'm not asking for a handouts from our tax dollars, but I do feel the purpose of taxes is to benefit our people.

apparently you didn't read the post where I pointed out I'm not collecting disability in spite of having a debilitating disease, instead I am attempting to win an election for a job I can do as it is more about the mind than a physically demanding job.
believe it or not I worked 90+ hour weeks before I was afflicted with "sarcoidosis", I made cabinet doors, I worked from 5am to 10:00 PM in a bait business, I worked in the auto parts industry, I worked 12 hour days and sometimes even 20 hour days at my own business.
I was even employed by the Republican national party at one time
I'm really sick of these bum accusations, because my employment at the present time is not structured like yours.
I'd like to see you try walking a day in my shoes, it feels like walking on broken glass and gravel nonstop and never goes away, while at the same time, eyes that burn and itch because my tear ducts don't work and never will again, while also basically having all the symptoms of flu with random body aches in any and every place my blood can go, along with the arthritis the inflammation leaves behind. I have to wear sunglasses nearly constantly when outdoors to prevent migrane headaches, I'm lucky to still be alive.
oh ,I have paid my dues, and I just want to leave this world a better place, I want all members of our community to be treated with respect, even those you apparently feel are undeserving.
it's time you learn the we are all human beings and matter!

I have never served in the military as I had numerous family members who had served in wars tell me not to.

I don't feel spending tax dollars on education would be a bad thing either.
obviously we disagree on some issues.
thanks!

as a former employee, and since the end of George Bush Sr's run as president, defector of the republican propaganda machine I honestly don't feel most republicans have a firm grasp on any reality outside their own programmed mind, and they are programmed, it was my job to do so.
the Republican machine has since grown into such a different beast, it is barely recognizable to its original form anymore.
being republican used to mean, honor and respect, it used to mean less government control, but not to the point of selling the entire country off to profit a handful of traitors!
the conservative days of that party are gone, perhaps actual conservatism will one day return, but these radical hybrids we have now claiming to be republicans are so off base, it's terrible!
so much so that I am embarrassed that I ever worked for that party.
I didn't see it at the time how we distorted reality, and programed each other with buzzwords like "liberal" suggesting Liberty is a bad thing?
and radical to describe a person who doesn't just shut up.
when in reality we should call them outspoken and maybe even heroic.
the sheer amount of intolerance and flat out racism was out of control,
clarity came to me when one of my friends showed me a photo of his nephew who was part black, and a co-worker made a off color remark. it was then I realized who I was working for. I was working for people who wanted my friend to be ashamed of his nephew because his father was black. I saw his smile and happiness wilt away, amid the snickers and taunts until I left, never to return.
I honestly could care less if I've lost your vote for sticking to the truth and arguing in favor of liberty and for the benefit of all our people. I'm in favor of inclusion instead of separation.
if you are more loyal to a party than you are to your neighbors and family then,
go stick your vote in your rich pals pocket along with those principles our ancestors fought and died to protect,

as for my ex girlfriend who grew up on military bases?
haven't seen her in a year or so

Posted by metasonics (anonymous) on August 15, 2008 at 9:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Woodtick, naw ,why would I need to put any thought into it when the facts speak so much more by themselves?
that's the beauty of not having talking points dictated.
we're free to interpret the facts however makes most sense to US, not a self-proclaimed expert else telling us how to interpret the facts!
I do have to agree that you may have been onto something someone should investigate there!
I suppose Bush may have had something to gain from Wellstones death.
interesting theory you've brought up.
how do you think he did it?
think he rigged the plane?, could that be why the pilot that had made that same flight so many times before just flew right into the side of a mountain?
and just in time so that Wellstone didn't get to officially vote against the war? I remember telling a mutual friend of Paul's that I thought something like that was gonna happen not even a whole day before it did.
that is quite the juicy conspiracy theory you got there.
so well constructed, it could have just of easily been truth!
wow, not even any loose ends with that one.
well done!

Well, in less than a generation, the white population will cease to be a majority in the USA. Then, finally; we'll see the end of the republican party along with all the corruption that goes with it. Latinos, Asians and black people will have control of the policies and direction of this country, hopefully; modeling the USA after the European Countries. Unfortunately, I'm too old to see that day. But knowing the change is on the horizon, that spending on bombs and missles will be replaced with spending on social programs, gives me some faith that the USA and the ideals of its founding fathers will continue to exist. Unfortunately, this new generation of americans will be sattled with the burden of over ten trillion dollars in debt.

Mgdbottled before you get to excited about this socialistic society you are looking forward to, you should check to see who is paying the vaste majority of taxes and owns the companies that employ most of the citizens. European countries, oh you mean the folks that would be speaking German if it weren't for the good old USA. You apparently failed history in school. Why can't you make it on your own, must the government do everything for you?

Posted by mgdbottled (anonymous) on August 15, 2008 at 11:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, another one who thinks the USA freed Europe in WWII. Learn your history. The Russians defeated the Nazis with a help from the USA, England and Canada and others. The main players in Europe were Russia and Germany. The USA played a small part in that conflict; but likes to take all the glory. Too many ignorant folks in this country. The USA beat Japan, true; but had a only a small part to play in Europe. Seventy five percent of Germany's army was tied up in Russia.

I pay about 42% of my income in taxes now and get little to nothing for it. I'd rather pay 50% of my income in taxes and get free medical, free university studies, a guaranteed home and job for anyone who wants or needs one. I want to live in a country that respects all of its citizens. Not just the one's who have all the money. To each in accord to their contribution is just "BS" in the USA. It's to each in accord to their social group status and I'm just plain sick and tired of it. Don't even try to sell your republican dribble on me. I'm one of the educated ones who's informed.

Socailism? that sounds like everything would be fair and square and everyone would live happily ever after right. Not so much, who would get to decide what is fair? The corrupt politicians, I don't think that anyone would consider that fair. With socialism comes stagnation, why would anyone work harder than they need to, why would anyone ever invent anything if they knew the government would just take the extra money they made and give it away to all the other citizens? Our government can't manage money as it is, why would anyone want to throw even more money at our government?

Posted by Woodtick (anonymous) on August 15, 2008 at 12:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So paying 50% of what you earn in taxes is equated to "free"? Strange concept in my view.

I wonder where he went to college? I am still waiting for an answer to who will work and pay taxes, I hope you are not counting on the large percentage of free-loaders that this country has now. They will be the majority you said, I wish you luck. I lived in Europe for over 3 years, have friends in England and Canada, they are not real happy with 60% taxes and not much to show for it. Perhaps you should talk to some WWII vets and if you survive , then come back and tell us your so-called knowledge of WWII. 42% taxes, wow, I thought only Republicans were rich, you must work at a republican owned company. I love paying that kind of taxes, that means I am doing well. You do realize that your taxes are going up when Barack Hussain Obama gets into office. Bottled, the life you describe is exactly what they have in Cuba, question is, why aren't you there? Your taxes will go down and you will get all the freebies that you are longing for.

as27, what we pay in taxes wouldn't even cover the utilities of government buildings. It is a fact that every day there are getting to be more people living off the government and less people paying taxes. What is going to happen when the free-loaders become the majority? Sound cold, yes, but sometime we must face the facts. Government programs are needed but also encourage laziness. May I suggest taking Economics 101.

Posted by Woodtick (anonymous) on August 15, 2008 at 3:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

as27 - I am assuming that you are a supporter of Robin Hood - I mean Obama, and his rob from the rich and give to the poor mantra. Why should people be penalized for being successful? The very notion that people have the OPPORTUNITY to be successful is what makes this country great and makes it such a draw for people from other countries. If we allow the government to take profits from the "rugged individualists" and give it the "less fortunate" we will end up with a society that has little or no incentive to be creative and/or entrepreneurial. This wreaks of Socialism. I, for one, want nothing to do with it. I prefer to work hard for what I have and take my chances. Before you start your name calling rant in response to this I will tell you that I have no problem with helping someone when they are down. I do it all the time. What I DO have a problem with is someone telling me that I HAVE to do it.

while I agree there are a small group of people willing to abuse the charity and decency of others, I have found most people are genuinely doing their best and strive for success.

it is not a "robin Hood" concept to suggest some in our society have benefited in a disproportionate way from our way of life.

I am sure we all could be millionaires if we had government funds covering our losses annually like say "Chrysler corp."

the actual portion of our expenditures that go to fund social and financial assistance programs, are minuscule, when compared to the Corporate Welfare we dole out by the truckload.

if you are looking for people to blame, I suggest you take a look in General Motors direction, for using the tax breaks they were given to move jobs to Mexico, or take a look at the those who profited through reduced tariffs, and reducing our competitiveness globally.
the free trade agreement, is what sold this country out to foreign interests, and it will be our ultimate demise if we continue to let it siphon our nations wealth and security.

it was the republicans who sold us out to fill the pockets of a couple spoiled rich brats.
I realize they were lied to and deceived like all the rest us were, but it is time to face reality.
the republican leadership has been caught red-handed, with both mass amounts of blood on their hands and huge personal profits, from the misery of others, all the while sending their own supporters down the river without any hope for rescue in sight!
does anyone feel they are better off now than when slick willy was in office?
does anyone feel we are heading in a better direction?
which is worse? a cheating husband?, or 100,000 dead, and our economy in shambles, with a dismal future and no solutions in sight!
I'd support a guy with an Arab sounding name, who is at least offering solutions, much quicker than yet another republican proven to be personally profiting from selling his own people out.
How is it McCain survived his Vietnam imprisonment while the rest didn't?, what did he supply them with to justify keeping him alive?
it must have been his obvious loyal nature like he showed his wife after getting out.
as an example I offer his past criticisms of George Bush which for some reason are now forgotten.
He's not even loyal to his own party.
despite that he isn't offering anything different.

I went to college at NDSU and obtained a BS in Business and an MS in Economics. Then off to Michigan where I am today where I obtained a JD in Law. It was the economic studies and all the american history classes that completely changed my thinking about the American Capitalist System and just how terribly broken it is. I never learned factually correct history till I went to college. That stuff they tried to espouse in high school was just plain inaccurate. Why anyone earning less than a half million or so a year would vote republican is beyond me. I guess they just never learned to add and subtract come income tax time. Seems to me some people pick an issue and stick to it. Like guns. Obama has said consistently that the 2nd Amendment is an individual right of the people. What part of that don't people understand. Your guns are safe. Obama wants to tax the rich and give an energy rebate of a grand to each american family paid for by big oil. What part of that don't people understand. McCain will continue the Bush tax cuts which will mean about $127 to each American family. Lets see, last time I checked a grand is more than $127.

tsy86h, I certainly don't condone or endorse abortion, and I haven't heard of anyone being pro-abortion either.
I have heard of women seeking to abort unborn babies though.
as a man I don't feel I have the right to tell women what they can or cannot do with their bodies.

Cooper - So now every time a democrat gets killed it must somehow be a Republican (or someone coerced, paid, hired, etc., by a Republican) that is behind it? You truly are delusional. And before you put all of the blame for limbless children and burnt babies on the President and Republicans in general you should probably take a look at who voted to back the war in Iraq. tsy86h - I have relatives that have been in Iraq too and they have said the same things that your brother said. It may not be popular with a lot of people, but we NEED to be there to at least try to liberate the Iraqi people.

as27;
I attended the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. A private law school. Tuition is now over $900 per credit hour there. It was $127 per credit hour when I attended. Great School and rated number 18 from the top in quality in the country. It's the largest law school in the country now. If you were referring to the University of Michigan, good luck in qualifying and much more reasonably priced. One of the best in the country; but Cooley frequently beats the U of M in first time passing rates on the bar exam. I've been practicing law for over 20 years now. Just a solo general practice with emphasis in business and real estate. Best part is working for myself with the ability to pick and choose my clients. Won't get rich; but the life style up here in NW lower Michigan is fantastic. I live on the tip of the little finger for those familar with Michigan. In Leelanau County just north of the Traverse City area.
