Somethin’s Brewin’ replaces Coffee Cabin

Published Monday, August 18, 2008

Schultz-Fred

The name of Lisa Schultz-Fred’s new Fergus Falls coffee business says it all: “Somethin’s Brewin’ ... and it’s more than just coffee.”

That’s because Somethin’s Brewin’, located on North Cascade in the former Coffee Cabin space, will also offer books for sale, seminars in the evenings and specialty treats when it opens Sept. 1.

“It’s much more than just a coffee house,” Schultz-Fred said last week. “I want to minister here, too.”

Schultz-Fred, the daughter of long-time Fergus Falls mayor Kelly Ferber and his wife, Marcia, co-owned Ten Mile Lake Resort and Steakhouse with her husband, Pat, for 21 years.

Even before Pat’s death in 2005, Schultz-Fred began giving talks on her experiences and Christian faith, seminars that have brought her to parts of the Dakotas, Wisconsin and Minnesota in the years since.

Schultz-Fred’s interest in opening a coffee business dates back at least two years, when the Coffee Cabin space was for sale. The timing wasn’t right back then, she said, but when the space came up for sale again this year, she was ready. The Coffee Cabin was owned by JoAnn Walvatne.

With the opening of Somethin’s Brewin’, Schultz-Fred said she’ll offer a place where people can relax and get away from the daily grind. She plans to host evening seminars on faith and will work from an upstairs office when she’s not down in the coffee shop. In addition to new carpet and furnishings, Schultz-Fred plans to decorate Somethin’s Brewin’ with some of her favorite inspirational quotes.

“I want it to have a message when somebody comes in,” she said.

As for the menu, Somethin’s Brewin’ will offer everything from a good cup of black coffee to specialty coffees, teas and smoothies. Baked goods, soup, sandwiches, salads, quiche and soft pretzels are also planned.

Schultz-Fred said she intends to hire three to four employees. She’ll also have a lot of help from her husband, Kevin, and children, Ben, Jenna and Jared, as she prepares to officially open Sept. 1. Somethin’s Brewin will open at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.

I have 2 questions...will you be open any evening hours (why cant there be a coffee shop in town open past 5) and will you still have free wi-fi access. Good luck and I look forward to the coffee.

How many religious themed coffee shops are going to use this location before they figure out that not everyone in Fergus wants a helping of daily scripture with their coffee? With so few places open in the evening they may consider broadening their scope to encourage a higher rate of business.

We tend to be out around town in evenings and it is nice to have something open past 6 or 7 - hopefully we'll find better hours now. Best of luck

Obviously she seems to be experienced enough to know how to make this business work. I would venture to guess that there more potential customers in Fergus than critics. Whether or not you decide it's your style or not, well, that's your business. I personally wish her luck and hope this new venture does as well for her as Ten Mile.

I just want to say I think Lisa will do fine. I do know that the previous owner was open till 8 during Aug-Dec and didn't have very many customers after 6. The kids do come right after school and like to sit around using the internet till late, but that's it. I think the previous owner did just fine for being young and no business experiance, and good luck to them moving out east!(That's why they sold. Husband is getting a job out there)Also, the coffee cabin was a christian place. They played christian music and had christian books. People weren't bothered! So I don't see why people are complaining so much! Lisa, you are going to do fine! You do what you need to do! You are a busy woman! I believe your ministry will grow! God is smiling!
