Work together with junk
Published Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Last week’s decision by the Otter Tail County board of commissioners to not proceed with a county-wide junk ordinance will be acceptable, provided residents clean up the junk without the ordinance.
That is a big if, however.
After receiving opposition from salvage businesses, the county abandoned an ordinance requiring salvage operators to install fencing and adhere to other regulations. Salvage operators are willing to work with the county to reduce the safety and aesthetics issues in exchange for not having an ordinance that would be more costly to them.
Let’s hope the agreement works. No one wants to put the salvage operators out of business, because they perform a valuable service for area residents. On the other hand, those who live in and visit our beautiful county do not want to see piles of old vehicles, appliances and other debris.
If, a year from now, there are still piles of junk visible in high-traffic areas, the county board should reconsider the junk ordinance.
