Obama is a scary candidate
Published Wednesday, August 20, 2008
I would like to ask Maryann Shores a few questions. You say that Barrack Hussein Obama is a Christian. Well, then, why did he write a book in which he states, “If I have to choose Christianity or Muslim, I will choose Muslim.”
And why did he take his Senatorial oath of office on the Koran instead of the Bible?
Why has he taken our American flag off of his presidential touring plane. To me, not only is he not Christian, he isn`t even American.
He preaches change; I`m afraid of his change. Please check him out before you vote for him to be the leader of our nation.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by AndyMosity (anonymous) on August 20, 2008 at 12:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Once again, just goes to shows how the lowest common denominator thinks...

You put too much stock into emails. The part about the American flag is partially true, it was removed when the plane was being refurbished, likely painted over. The rest of what you wrote is contrived. There's this handy little website, snopes.com. Check it out before passing on fabricated email garbage.

Here's the scoop for those too lazy to fact check.
From the book, page 261...
"In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly: they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during WWII, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
Not that it should matter, Obama is christian.
Keith Ellison is a member of the US House of Representatives (not the Senate) from District 5 in Minnesota. He was sworn in on the Quran because he is a Muslim. Ever heard of freedom of(from) religion???
It's ignorant people, like the author of this letter, that makes having intelligent discussions about political philosophy almost impossible. I mean, the crap in these emails have been circulating now for many, many months... yet people still take them as facts.
THAT is what is scary, Rosalie!

Holy Cow lady, do you believe everything Rush says. That was an elected person from the cities that was a muslim that took the oath on a koran. And he's muslim (GET IT) That would be like asking a christian to take your oath on a koran. Don't you think your oath would be worth more taking it on the book of your religous beliefs? Please check your facts next time. WOW!

Shame on the Daily Journal for publishing such drivel.
(1) Obama is not a Muslim. He is a Christian. The "quote" you have published does not even exist. The ACTUAL quote that I believe Ms. DeBlieck may be referring to comes from Obama's book, The Audacity of Hope, and is as follows:
"Whenever I appear before immigrant audiences, I can count on some good-natured ribbing from my staff after my speech; according to them, my remarks always follow a three-part structure: "I am your friend," "[Fill in the home country] has been a cradle of civilization," and "You embody the American dream." They're right, my message is simple, for what I've come to understand is that my mere presence before these newly minted Americans serves notice that they matter, that they are voters critical to my success and full-fledged citizens deserving of respect.
"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." [Page 260-261]
(2) Mr. Obama did not take his Senatorial oath of office on a Koran. He took his oath on a bible. For a picture of this act, please see here: http://time-blog.com/theag/360_obama_che...
(3) Mr. Obama did not permanently remove the American flag from his touring plane. The flag was re-stylized when the plane was refurbished. Pictures of his campaign transportation (as well as an explanation of this falsehood) can be found here:

In the future, please factcheck what you publish. Opinions and editorials are a great thing, but they shouldn't be used to spread blatant falsehoods.

I agree. VERY irresponsible of the Daily Journal to KNOWINGLY publish FALSE information. Whether it is someone's "Opinion" or not, it is not acceptable or responsible to publish LIES. I wonder if they would publish a letter that is comprised of a bunch of lies about the other candidate who happens to be a war veteran? Perhaps someone should find out?

The entire Obama campaign is based on "change". It is full of promises of "change". However, Obama has been in a position for the past 2 years that should have enabled him to initiate some a "change". However, he has not introduced one single bill in the senate to make "change". My question is, if he has so many wonderful changes to make, why hasn't he ever done anything using what has been available for the past two years to accomplish change? The whole "change" thing is simply to get votes and is not backed up by actions from his past.

WHO CARES!!!!!!!!! If he wants to be a Muslim, why do you care?????? UGH

goingfishing... Yeah, so why not spread lies about him, right? You don't like a candidate or his messege so there's nothing wrong with just making things up and passing them off as the truth, right?
I'll tell you this, you could not pay me to vote for McCain, but I'm still not going to LIE about who he is as a person or try to invalidate his love for this country and his desire to do what is best for it.
This is the true "change" I care about when comes to Barrack Hussein Obama. While one side focuses and thrives on fear, negativity and LIES just like the ones in this letter, the other has a message hope for a time when we're all better than that. And to be completely honest, I'd rather pay $100 for an empty jar of hope, than pay $1 for a jar full of fear and lies.

From goingfishing:
"he has not introduced one single bill in the senate to make 'change'. "
Maybe if you'd have done your homework, you would know that this would be an invalid argument. Here's a small sampling of bills wrote or co-wrote which have coincedentally been passed into law:
Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 is a law of the United States federal government that amended parts of the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995. It strengthens public disclosure requirements concerning lobbying activity and funding, places more restrictions on gifts for members of Congress and their staff, and provides for mandatory disclosure of earmarks in expenditure bills.
The Lugar-Obama initiative, authored by U.S. Sens. Dick Lugar and Barack Obama, was signed into law by President George W. Bush. The Lugar-Obama initiative expands U.S. cooperation to destroy unsecured, lightweight anti-aircraft missiles and other conventional weapons, and expands the State Department’s ability to detect and interdict weapons and materials of mass destruction.
Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006 (S. 2590)[1] is an act that requires the full disclosure of all entities or organizations receiving federal funds beginning in fiscal year (FY) 2007 on a website maintained by the Office of Management and Budget.

I'll even mention this, his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427

I can't beleive M. Shores wrote that; and then it gets printed. Man.... But WOW! Look at some of these responses, you folks are really doing some fact-checking and that's all a good sign of what's to come in November. To Ms. Shores; madam, you are sorely informed. Please do not cast your vote based on lies.

duchess, the difference is that the statements of the original author simply aren't opinion. They're blatant lies. Furthermore, even if the Daily Journal chose not to publish this article (as they rightly should have done if they wanted to have or maintain any journalistic integrity), it wouldn't be a violation of anyone's free speech, as the first amendment only prohibits the government from infringing on one's freedom of speech or the press.

I agree duchess........The journal is already so biased towards Obama that it's sickening. The fact that they printed all of these "blatant lies" about him really DOES surprise me.

Freedom of speach doesn't apply only to liberals. You would not be complaining about the DJ printing someone's opinion if you agreed with it. This is classic!

duchess, does freedom of speech mean that it's OK to spread lies???
Woodtick, do you believe Rosalie's statements to be truth??
Posted by goingfishing (anonymous) on August 21, 2008 at 11:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)
OK.......I'll back down on my comment about him not doing anything the past two years, although I consider those things somewhat lesser in stature to what he is now promising. So, why hasn't he done more significant things? And, please provide me with a solid list of changes he's promising. And make that list a solid one that does not include anything that he's flip flopped on. Come up with a list of 10 items of signifigance and I'll become a supporter.

It is so strange that anything written about a liberal is always false but if it is written about a conservative it is the truth. If you believe everything that is written in newspapers and what is on TV you have a real problem. All of what we are reading is opinions and you know what they say about those!

Obama lacks common sense and anyone who still wants to vote for him....well, probably lacks it as well.

as27, you forgot the part about him hating America and not wearing a flag pin.

Not that I believe your pledge to become a supporter, goingfishing, but you can find a list with dozens of things Obama wants to change on his Web site, take your pick. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ Although I find it odd to promise to become a supporter if a candidate promises to change something. Mccain also makes promises about making changes at http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issu...
Read them both. Lots of promises without explanations on how any of it can get done. Oh, politics, will you ever learn?
Posted by Woodtick (anonymous) on August 21, 2008 at 8:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)
jafo - No, I do not believe that Rosalie's statements are truth. I think that anyone with even a little common sense would take her comments for what they are - the rantings of a lunatic. I was simply agreeing with Duchess that it is amazing that the journal printed anything negative about a democrat and/or liberal given their obvious leanings towards that side.
