Child drinks bowl cleaner

Published Wednesday, August 20, 2008

An 11-month-old Fergus Falls child was taken to Lake Region Hospital Tuesday evening after drinking an unknown amount of toilet bowl cleaner.

Police received a report of the incident at about 6:30 p.m. When an officer arrived at a Fergus Falls home, a woman said she’d been giving her children a bath when her son got ahold of some toilet bowl cleaner and drank an unknown amount. The officer called Poison Control and staff with Ringdahl Ambulance transported the child to Lake Region Hospital.

How awful!! I pray that the child has a full recovery. Now regarding the toliet bowl cleaner...usually those bottles have 'child safety' caps on them. Wonder what happened?

So why wasn't the mother supervising her 11 month old child (and I STRESS 11 month old) while 'she was giving him a bath'? Those types of cleaners really need to be locked up from small children, and some adults obviously!

Have a heart. It's enough that this child could be seriously injured or could have died. We all know she should have been more responsible, but you don't need to instantly sling insults at her. These kinds of household accidents happen every day and hearing the stories hopefully make us all more aware of the dangers. It's easy to cast blame, but it does more good to send a prayer for this family.

Well I tend to clean the bathroom at the same time.
One less thing to do. Combining two chores into one.
She probably turned her back to grab a towel or something and he grabbed it.

Lala: It's quite possible that the cleaner was left out in the open for 10 seconds while the mother turned her back. I would agree that she made a mistake leaving the cleaner in the reach of her child, but we all make mistakes at some point in our lives.

That is the same thought I had apple I have learned you have to multi task to keep up with things....maybe some of these people casting blame and insults have a nanny or don't have kids.

Well I have kids, and certainly do not leave these types of cleaners out. I do hope the child will be okay, I am thinking of them. It's just a shame that something like this can happen.

I wish we could get an update on how the child is doing. I feel very bad for the child and the family.

I think each one of us as a parent has had those close calls. If you are a parent of a child over three you would be lying if you said you haven't. Look in the mirror. There is no way to avoid them at all times. If you are not a parent, then you have no room to even comment on such a article. Because perhaps the near accidents of others were not in the paper, the errors that people such as Lala may have made, may not be commented about. Who knows if this child was even injured. Perhaps the mother was just playing it safe by bringing him in, as she was not sure if he drank any. The journal does not tell the whole story as usual. And also, no - not all toilet bowl cleaners have child protection caps, but they should. I feel it is a shame that people feel the need to critecize other people's parenting skills when they do not know the other person or the situation. I am not from this area originally, but I am learning that this community is like this, they thrive on other people's pain and drama. That is very sad. As a parent, I would be devastated at such an accident, and then to have people judging me too would be totally unfair. I can only hope that the mother of this boy has not read these unfair comments from obviously ignorant people.

Call me whatever names you want Wowee, that's not why I am on this forum. I just think (as a mother myself) calling this a 'mistake' is kind of an understatement. This could have been a very big tradgedy! I'm glad the child is doing ok, but hopefully this is a lesson learned the hard way.
And one more thing Wowee, the comment you made about "Because perhaps the near accidents of others were not in the paper, the errors that people such as Lala may have made, may not be commented about. " is total B.S.
