More filings for city seats

Published Thursday, August 28, 2008

Add another candidate to Fergus Falls' growing list of mayoral candidates.

Ivan G. "Skip" Mallas filed for office Wednesday. He joins a field that, to date, includes John Strauch and Fergus Falls Alderman Hal Leland. Alderman Ben Schierer has committed to running for mayor, but as of the close of business Wednesday he had not filed for the mayoral seat.

There were two more filings in the city council races Wednesday, as well.

Jamie Cooper (First Ward) and Tim Rundquist (Third Ward) filed for office. Also filing Tuesday were:

• Jim Fish (Second Ward)

• Danny Kvenvolden (Third Ward)

• Daryl Hanson (Fourth Ward)

• JoEllen Thacker (Fourth Ward)

Tuesday marked the first day mayoral, City Council and District 544 school board hopefuls could officially file for candidacy.

One City Council member from each Fergus Falls ward is up for election this fall. Third Ward Councilman Rick Wilson and Fourth Ward Councilman Ben Schierer have said they will not seek re-election, as they are pursuing county and mayoral positions, respectively. Merlyn Shelstad, an alderman from the Second Ward, has also said he will not run again.

Meanwhile, three District 544 positions will be open this fall. Tarma Carlson, Tom Kummrow and Matt Lemke are up for re-election, though Kummrow, a 25-year board member, has said he will not run again.

To date, Jeff Hohrman is the only person to file for a school board position.

Filing for city and school district positions continues through Sept. 9. Both City Hall and the Fergus Falls school district office at 502 Friberg Ave. North will be closed Monday for Labor Day.

yeah....what happened to jamie cooper? I was hopeful.

He got lost in the tunnels at the RTC and has not been heard from for a while. Scouting out locations for a museum and a police station, I think. But it's not his fault he's lost. It's on video.

Oh boy. We got Rick Wilson & Ben Schierer running for Mayor. Hope one of 'em can unseat Boss Hogg from his perch. Then finally, this city can be free to welcome businesses and think forward;not backwards.

Read the story, people.

Apparantly, you folks need to go back to school and learn to read as it states that by Tuesday afternoon Jamie Cooper is running for First Ward.

Read the headline, people. The story was updated at 2:32 pm. When I read this article around 1pm it did not say anything about Cooper. Apparantly someone else needs to go back to school!

I really hope that someone else signs up to run for first ward! It could be scarey.

tsy86h, I suggest you sign up!

GO JoEllen Thacker! She is such a nice person, I have worked with her before, I like her...

It’s up to the people in the first ward, if they don’t want Cooper all they have to do is nothing.

Would anybody support an 18 year old to run for mayor?

Posted by metasonics (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 3:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

shouldi, I am one of the few who doesn't believe in ageism.
age does not dictate behavior or intelligence.
If you feel you have what it takes, go for it.
the worst that could happen is you could lose, but you'll never know unless you try.
the future belongs to your generation, whether you decide to participate now or in the future is up to you.

I say "Carpe Diem"

Well thanks Jamie. But, just because u don't believe in ageism doesn't mean the rest of our great city is that way. If I can get more support I will run, but I don;t think the support of Jamie Cooper is enough to go far...

Go Cooper!

Posted by tsy86h (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 4:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Cooper, I will not run because I know I do not have the experience and qualifications to perform the job. Hmm, maybe you should reconsider. Did you make a youtube video showing you signing up?

Posted by metasonics (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 4:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

tsy86h, I assure you. I signed up!
are you even going to debate this now too?
lol

So, do I have anymore support from our grand city or does anybody want to read about what I want to do for our city?

Posted by E_85 (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 6:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

tsy86h, you are finally right, you don't have the qualifications for city council. I am so sick of the "arm chair quarterbacks" ragging on Coop. Coop, is sick and tired of the way things are being handled and is trying to do something about it. Meanwhile the rest of you just come on here and complain and then complain more when somebody has a different idea. This is a great venue to get your frustrations out about a certain subject, but a couple of people are using it just to bash Jamie. But what other canidate has been on here expressing his or her ideas?

Posted by rodentboy (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 7:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

shouldi, why don't you use your real name like Jamie and tell us what you have to say.

Posted by shouldi (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 9:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The reason I wont use my real name at the moment is because I just wish to remain anonymous until I have support. I would like to go for this but I don't want to look like a fool if I take a flop of any kind before the elections. Especially at work...

Posted by themominator (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 10:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey shouldi, I would love to hear your opinion and ideas for our city. I agree with Cooper that age doesn't have to matter if you are the right person. Let us know what you're thinking, it's important for the community and my kids!!

Posted by mccain08 (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 10:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

e-85 is right, even though e-85 ethanol takes more energy to produce than you can get out of it. if yer gonna "rag" on jamie cooper you should link your myspace and youtube.
tsy86h, did you make a video of yourself putting cooper down?

Posted by E_85 (anonymous) on August 27, 2008 at 11:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Not sure where you are getting your ethanol facts from McCain08, but they don't seem to be all there. But that is not what this thread is about. I hope more people come out and run, that way it pushes each candidate to be the best they can be. "shouldi", how could you take a flop before the elections? Most people will commend you for trying. Make sure you want to do it for the right reasons and not just for the sake of seeing if you can get elected. It is pretty hard to support just a made up name like "shouldi".

Posted by shouldi (anonymous) on August 28, 2008 at 1:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey, I am sorry about not using my real name but for the moment I am uncomfortable with that. Mainly because certain members of my family disapprove of my want to do this.

I agree that JoEllen Thacker would be great. She has a lot of institutional knowledge, and is bright and organized.

Posted by Sumwun (anonymous) on August 28, 2008 at 10:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It does no good to bicker about politics in an internet blog. Have you ever seen anyone EVER win an argument on here? Anyways, whoever you all vote for, make sure you research your candidate thoroughly before voting and not just go by how many hundreds of annoying blogs they can type up in one day.

Posted by Flashbang (anonymous) on August 29, 2008 at 6:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

And you can add religion to the list Sumwun. You're dead on. Also, shouldi, either jump in or jump out. Stand up or get out. Your wishy-washy posts are only beginning to show that you are wishy-washy. Maybe you need to stay away for awhile.
