For the first time this school year, kids around the area loaded their backpacks with supplies Tuesday and hopped on board the yellow bus bound for school.

Students at Cleveland Elementary School had a special surprise on top of the already anticipated first day of class.

Fourth and fifth grade students are the first to occupy the new structure, and were pleased as ever with the finished product.

“They’re pretty excited and I could sense their excitement coming in the front doors this morning,” said elementary schools principal Scott Colbeck, who was thrilled to introduce students and parents to the new building.

“When we pointed fourth and fifth grade students to the new wing, there were a lot of fist pumps,” Colbeck said.

“This is awesome!,” yelled one student as he turned the corner to witness the new hall.

Volunteers from various local service organizations were present to lend a helping hand, greeting parents and students and pointing kids in the right direction.

Much of the day’s beginning was dedicated to making sure that students found their way to the right buildings.

“The first day is all about getting all of the kids in the right locations and once we get them to their current location, the rest of the day just goes off without a hitch,” Colbeck said.

The new bus transfer system proved to be a success, with staff and volunteers present to help students onto the correct busses.

“It is much more of a user-friendly set-up than we’ve had in past years,” Colbeck said.

As of Tuesday morning, things were running smoothly at Adams Elementary, as well.

Over at McKinley, teachers are spending the day meeting individually with each kindergarten student and their parents. The official first-day for kindergarten will be Wednesday.

It was also the first day for seventh, eighth and ninth grade students at the temporary secondary school. Sophomores and up will begin Wednesday, allowing underclassmen an extra day to ease into the new school year.
