Ashby puts kids’ health first
Published Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Hats off to the Ashby School District for removing the candy and sugared and caffeinated beverages from vending machines and replacing them with healthier alternatives.
Across the country, childhood obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. If obesity is not curbed, it will translate into massive health problems for the U.S. down the road – heart disease, diabetes and many others.
While it would be ideal if students could choose to eat healthier foods, it seems less likely if they have access to better-tasting, less healthy foods. Taking away the temptation seems the best option, and other school districts should consider doing the same.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by TKay (anonymous) on September 9, 2008 at 12:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Some of the other districts have already been doing this in the area.

If the DJ would have done it's homework they would see that other schools have done this some time ago!
