Adapted bowling added as FFHS sport

A new extra-curricular activity is set to be offered this school year to Fergus Falls students with disabilities.

In an effort to provide additional activities to students, the Fergus Falls School Board approved a measure Monday to include adapted bowling as an independent provider lettering sport.

The sport, which is regulated under the Minnesota State High School League, will allow students with intellectual disabilities in grades seven through 12 to participate during the spring sports season. The season would wrap up with a state tournament in May.

“I think it would give a big boost to morale,” said Dawn Birch, who helped develop the proposal for the program.

In order for a student to letter in the sport, they must be enrolled in grades nine through 12, attend weekly practices, meet all training requirements, contribute to the team with a positive attitude and follow the rules of the Minnesota State High School League.

Twenty-six students participating in Special Olympics bowling this fall have expressed interest in playing for the Fergus Falls team.
