MSCTC music to Trosvig’s ears

Published Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Mike Trosvig has always had a thing for music.

After earning degrees in English, music, European studies and a masters in music theory and composition, his head is full of music-related knowledge ready to be shared.

Although creating a career in marketing, he’s never forgotten his roots.

Trosvig is the most recent addition to the music program faculty at MSCTC - Fergus Falls, where he will take on the instruction of music theory courses for first and second year students.

It’s not the first time he’s taught music courses in the Fergus Falls area. During the 2004-05 school year, he taught a garage band course at Fergus Falls High School.

Now he’s eager for the chance to share and explore music with students, once again.

“The fun part is trying to help them (students) get into a composer’s head,” Trosvig said.

His music theory courses are taken by both students who are in the process of completing their general education requirements, and by those who are attending the college to earn their associates degree in fine arts.

Whoever the student, Trosvig hopes he can open their eyes to a whole new side of music.

“I want them to think about why the composer wrote the piece and why it makes them feel the way it does,” Trosvig said.

The music program at MSCTC - Fergus Falls is unique in the sense that it offers students a comprehensive music program in a two-year college setting.

Trosvig says the program attracts students interested in pursuing a wide variety of music-related professions, ranging from careers as sound engineers and music producers to high school choir teachers.

Trosvig’s position at the college will take place on a part-time basis, as he will remain on staff at All Building Corporation, where he is currently employed as vice president.
