Dining with dads not only was a hit Thursday with kids who are in kindergarten classes at McKinley School. Fathers and special guests of the children took the opportunity to recall their own grade school days.
“I attended grade school at Leonard, N.D., about 40 miles southwest of Fargo,” said Andy Anderson who enjoyed lunch with his daughter, Alaina. “Coming here brings back some memories of my own childhood and early school years.”
Anderson and his daughter each enjoy lunchables — crackers, meat and cheese — so that’s what they brought to the cafeteria shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday. There are five kindergarten classes at McKinley, and the kids and adults used the dining room in different shifts.
While some brought bag lunches, others purchased the noon meal of chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, green beans, apple and milk.
“The timing was right for me to be here today, since I’m on the road a lot,” said Tyler Ring who took part in dining with dads with his son, Ethan. “It’s a fun time here at McKinley School.”
Ring recalled his grade school days at Langdon, N.D. Today he’s a sales manager for a sugar beet seed company. He took a sack lunch to school but his son, Ethan, enjoyed the hot meal provided by the school.
Dean Maanum, a programmer for Otter Tail Power Company’s system operations center, accompanied his daughter, Destiny, and said that over the years he’s enjoyed similar lunches with his older kids. He attended grade school at Starbuck.
“This is a great way to have parents and kids be together for a short while here at the school,” Maanum said.
The parents expressed appreciation to the school for arranging dining with dad — part of an already busy school day. The goal of the school was to make sure that each child had a visitor — a father, other family member or special guest.
“Our five kindergarten teachers did all of the planning for dining with dad, and as usual they did a fantastic job,” said McKinley School secretary Joan Helgeson. “It was a fun day for everyone.”
