Student safety priority in seeking commuter route
Published Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Safety was the main issue Monday for members of the school board and city council when discussing possible routes for students to cross when traveling on foot from the future Kennedy Secondary School to the future Roosevelt Education Center.
The Kennedy Secondary School, which is currently the middle school site, will house students in sixth through twelfth grades. The Roosevelt Education Center, currently the high school, will host a vocational wing, Area Learning Center classes and community education.
Because students attending Kennedy Secondary may need to travel to Roosevelt for vocational classes, the district is looking at plans which would allow a safe travel path across Randolph Ave.
Although no decisions have been made, school board and council members discussed the possibility of traffic lights and a temporary closure for part of Randolph Ave. between Friberg and the entrance to the parking lot. With that option, traffic would follow Burlington to reach the main parking lot entrance for student drop-off and bus transfer situations.
“If we’re looking at student safety, that would be the best thing to do,” said Superintendent Jerry Ness.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by Kloob (anonymous) on September 30, 2008 at 12:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Is the City spending taxpayer dollars trying to figure this out? If so, maybe they need something more to do???? I have an idea, start with trying to attract some new business to town.......
Oh yeah, the solution to a safe route from school to school: look both ways before you cross. That always worked for me back in the day.

What about the over crowded buses? That is an issue too!! There are days when the kids come home saying there was 3 kids to a seat on the bus today. And the bus driver tells the kids to just squeeze in like the last time. Where is the safety there?
Also, they are charging kids grades 5-12 $15 for 30 rides to
& from school if they live within 1 mile from their school. Nice. So, I get to put two kids on the bus in the morning and get to drop one off at school when they all three are transported to the same location to do bus exchanges. Does that make sense?

A pedestrian bridge would be a great idea. Look around Fargo/Moorhead. There are pedestrian bridges everywhere, by the schools and colleges. Of course, their streets are more congested than ours, but our children are just as important. That would help with traffic jams on Burlington in front of people's houses.

Kloob very good point-we can put the responsibility back to the students-look before crossing. Just a bummer the school district today has to worry about the liability if someone got hurt. But you know some parent would be down there throat if something happen. We are just suing ourselves to death. We the parents know our children would be walking to class over there-no big deal until something would happen then run around with their hair on fire blaming everyone they can. And yes I have been there and didn't sue. I knew the risk before it happen so when it happen I did not need to be compensated or blame someone. Sometimes accidents happen-and don't know of a smart one yet.

What about guards for the crosswalks?
