Party nets 30 underage citations
Published Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Thirty people were cited for underage drinking Friday night after Fergus Falls police responded to a report of a loud party on the 1000 block of East Vasa.
Police received a call regarding the party at about 10:40 p.m. and drove to the residence, where there were many cars parked in the area. People inside the house were uncooperative, and officers returned with a search warrant.
The warrant was executed and citations were issued to a dozen 18-year-olds, a dozen 19-year-olds and several 20-year-olds.
The incident is still under investigation to identify and charge those responsible for supplying the alcohol, according to the Fergus Falls Police Department. Anyone who supplies alcohol to a minor faces a misdemeanor and may be civilly responsible for the minor’s actions while he or she is intoxicated.
Some of the officers who responded to Friday’s call were on overtime as part of a $5,000 grant from the Minnesota Institute of Public Health.
The grant funds will be used primarily to enforce underage drinking laws, said Capt. Steve Adams.
The grant is a collaboration between the Otter Tail County Safe Community Coalition and the Family Services Collaborative.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by TheVikingman (anonymous) on September 30, 2008 at 2:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Maybe I am being critical of today's youth but when I was underage and drinking if the cops showed up and left without busting anybody I left. I DID NOT hang around and wait for them to come back...
It is sad OT was wasted on people that were willing to hang around and wait to get busted later.
Probably could have got most of them the next morning at 9am! :)

Most of the cases would be thrown out if there wasn't a positive breathalizer test to prove intoxication. An 18-19 year old ADULT does not have to submit to this test if not in a car.
Big waste of overtime money it sounds like.

who ever made the call on this party did the right thing. we (fergus falls residents) sit back and complain of these type of things happening in our town but no one steps up to the plate to do anything. thanks for making the call, wake up fergus falls, if you want a better town, make a move to help. if you think there is suspicious activity going on, do something. don't sit back and wait till it's too late.

GotOut,
I doubt the cops would have handed out tickets without first giving a breath test. 18-19 year olds don't have to submit to a breath test if not in a car? Since when???? Underage drinking is illegal wheather you are in a car or not.

underage drinking is illegal, you are right... but the fact that they were all in a house doesnt give the cops the right to give out citations. i mean if the kids did plan on leaving... well, its their own damn fault then. just the fact of giving the citation is totally bogus.

um I think something is wrong with that picture. Are you trying to state that it is legal for minors to drink as long as they are inside?
