Students asked to police themselves at parking lot hangout to avoid further actio

Published Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Noise caused by students gathering in the Fergus Falls High School parking lot is causing concern among neighbors.

Members of the school board and city council met Monday to discuss possible options for alleviating the problem. Working with student groups, such as the student council, was top among the ideas generated to ease the problem.

Working with law enforcement to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew on the district-owned lot is also an option, but it is not clear at this point what legal avenues would be necessary to enforce the curfew through the city.

At this point, the school board plans to take the issue to the student council in hopes that the students will police themselves before any further action is needed.

The school board is not discouraging students from gathering in the area, saying that it is well lit and, if students are behaving, a safe spot to congregate. The issue for students to consider will be the noise caused by loud music, engines and loud voices.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

I think a city-wide curfew of 9pm for everyone should be enacted. This whole "city" dies at that time anyway. This would fit in well with all the other programs that are currently in place to keep young people around and content.

/sarcasm off

I don't see why they have to hang out there anyway. I would think they could use the many spots designed for the youth of our community. For example; they could hang out at umm, ahhhh, ohhh, geez let's see, well......oh of course, no that wouldn't work. Can't they just drive around/cruise like we did when we were kids? No wait, who can afford to drive around anymore? Well anyway, they should be home studying or chatting on line with predetors anyway.
