Reels turning on new movie project
Six weeks after city council rejects filming deal, a new project surfaces
Published Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Another Twin Cities-based producer is interested in filming a movie at the Regional Treatment Center.
And the genre? A psychological thriller.
A number of producers have expressed interest in the RTC since the city council turned down a film proposal from Dav Kaufman in mid-August, said Chris Grap of the Minnesota Film and TV Board.
Aldermen hesitated to allow Kaufman’s project — also a psychological thriller — after members of Campus Development Group (CDG) said they believed a film could deter students from attending a future business college at the RTC.
Despite the decision on the Kaufman film, a different producer may make his case to the council as soon as Monday.
“This person had heard about what happened with Dav but he wanted to run it up the flagpole,” Grap said.
Grap said he does not know many details of the proposed film, but did say it is a psychological thriller with a budget of $1.2 to $2 million. This budget is larger than that of the Kaufman film, primarily to pay for bigger names; negotiations are ongoing with a number of fairly well-known actors, Grap said. The number of cast and crew would be about the same as for the Kaufman film — around 70.
Grap spoke with the producer — whose name has not been released — Monday morning to provide some background on the RTC, the college project and the objections to Kaufman’s film.
The word is still out on whether or not that producer will come before the council at all.
“As far as I can tell, it’s not a definite that they’re going to make the request,” said Jean Bowman of the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Bowman said she learned of the second film project from Grap Friday. She notified Rick Anderson of CDG, which is still opposed to a film, as well as council members.
The producer would like to begin filming in early November, Grap said, so he would need to come before the council as soon as possible to request use of the RTC. The next city council meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by otter (anonymous) on October 1, 2008 at 12:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I think it is time that we have Mr Anderson step up with a signed document or quit stopping others from using the building. It is a building that was used to house people that could not survive in society...so it already must have a stigma attached to it. We need to let the public decide what is best not Mr Anderson.

Fergus needs this. I hope this one is approved. I've lived in Fergus all my life and I'm highly considering moving to somewhere with more potential for growth. I don't want to leave my family or my job, but this town is dying fast.

Let this one come in. Fergus Falls needs this. I am also a Fergus Falls residence since birth and consider leaving all the time because of the stupid things that the city does. If it were not for my family here I would be gone. Lets see this go through, it certainly can't hurt.

we haven't heard from the CDG in awhile but i bet they will be screaming no way to this movie or any other projects that is not related to the school. i think that they are going for the school or nothing and we will be stuck with the bill for their wishfull thinkig.

I have lived in Fergus for the last 5 years and am amazed at all the stupid things that happen here! Why not once have something Fergus can brag about. Draw some attention to this sad town. Seriously...as a current student I would think it would be fun to go to a "school" where a scary movie was filmed. Talk about bragging rights. And if they are so worried what these "posssible" students might think...ASK THEM...because obviously you don't give a hoot what the less prominent members of your community think. Bet we would see more revenue from this movie and its crew than what would come from the tentative students. COME ON FERGUS FALLS!

As I said before, China has 1 billion people living there. So what if Anderson is right and there are a few that wouldn't come to school here, there certainly are enough students to choose from.
Just who has control over the facility, the City of Anderson?

Perhaps our city council hopefuls would like to comment on this "situation"?
I would certainly like to hear their thoughts.

I believe it is proper that Mr. Anderson and his people come forward with something MORE than a concept and vague promises.
Otherwise people are likely to thing there is something fishy about the whole thing.
As a relative newcomer to the area I can tell you that this town DESPERATELY needs something to get it moving. Here is a nice, scenic little town with much to reccomend it being killed by its lack of leadership and imagination.

Let's see if the powers to be drop the ball this time. With all this turn down, we're just making FF a laughing stock. How does that make you feel when you are someplace else and they ask you where you're from and you say Fergus Falls and they laugh. Its really discusting.

I say put it up for a special election and let the public decide. Isn't that the way they used to do things like this?
Not necessarily about this project, but what the accepted uses would be for RTC.

I think the film would be alot of fun and great for the city. Although ragging on Rick Anderson isn't really warranted. He has his opinion and he can definitely influence city decisions. You can't fault him for having a voice that is heard and staying firm on his position. Also, the last movie was lower budget and perhaps having actual known actors will change a few minds with the city.

tippy98c,
as a city council hopeful, I'm in favor of this project, just as I was very vocal and in favor of Dav Kaufmans.
I still don't believe filming any movie in the RTC would be bad for our community or hamper the CDG's efforts.

I stayed in the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado some years ago. That hotel was used in the movie "The Shining" with Jack Nickolson. The hotel denied it, but we knew the truth. There was no stigma attached to it at all--it just made it more intriguing! I say, go ahead and use it--such interesting buildings and grounds. I might even come home to watch!
Posted by watermelon (anonymous) on October 1, 2008 at 7:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The shining wasn't filmed in the Stanley hotel, but you'll be elated to know that parts of "Dumb and Dumber" were shot there. Part of the crappy miniseries based off the same title was. It supposedly was the inspiration for the Stephen King novel. Everything else with the Shining was shot on a movie set, except for a few outdoor shots which were taken at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon.
I gotta hand it to the fine citizens, though. I think you all expect a little too much out of a town of only 12 thousand people. Long term economic growth is a good thing, short term doesn't help in the long run. If it is a larger budget movie, the city stands to make more money to stick back into the local economy, unlike Dav Kaufman and his laughable 10 grand. The city could only buy a used buick and lunch at hamburger hamlet for that paltry sum.
Dangle a shiny piece of metal in front of them, and they think it's a gold doubloon.
More strip malls, fast food joints, banks and real estate offices I say! It is the path to a future of notoriety and excellence!

Cooper, I think you have demonstrated on many occasions your ignorance. Talk about not knowing the facts.
If the public wants answers why don't you as bloggers ask this newspaper to actually do a factual article with a phone call to Mr. Anderson. Doesn't anybody realize that they don't want to report anything factual but let you knuckleheads beat yourselves into a frenzy speculating about what could happen.
One phone call and interview would provide the answers you are looking for. I realize it would not be very exciting and then you would have to go back and play video games. Although that is probably better then spending 23 hours a day thinking about what you would write today.
I hear CDG is moving forward on the college. The Mn historical representative and National Parks representative from Washington DC was here to review the project. As well as their architect and engineering firm to make sure they comply with historical guidelines in remodeling.
They have 2 groups traveling to China next month. Both colleges are making significant investments to send up to 8 people each to visit with and discuss the curriculum with the chinese universities. Hearing this is certainly makes me feel like this is getting very close.
I cannot believe there would be any change in their opinion on having a slasher movie in their dormitory. I also cannot believe there would be any change in the city councils stance. Why in the world is Mark Seivert promoting a movie knowing this is not the wishes of the council. Jean Bowman follows his advice and he is wrong. Both Bowman and Mark Seivert are not good for Fergus Falls and need to resign.

Doesn't matter. Each time he blabs on here its another nail in his coffin. You keep taking our bait and get drawn into these conversations as if we really cared and making yourself seem less and less mature to hold a seat on the city council. So keep those posts coming. I suppose that whole police corruption thing you're always referring to is that easily accesible handgun and ammunition you kept around in your arcade full of youngsters in your WAAAY convincing youtube video you advertise all the time. Thats the kind of responsible behavior we need to get this city on the right track.

Lala,
I still don't care if I win or lose this election, if I win it just means more work for me to benefit others, many of whom won't appreciate it anyway.
I'm only in this election to fulfill a promise!
because unlike many previous council members, I keep my word.
I believe my word is my honor and my honor is my life!
I know you are a republican, what I don't understand is why anyone would still be a republican?
I used to be fooled by them too, but I woke up after the first Bush. and accurately predicted that W would get us into a war as soon as I heard he won.
I even told my coworkers it would be with Bin ladden who was training in Montana at the time with former Marines from dessert storm who had life debts with him.
don't you ever get tired of the anger that goes along with being a republican? or denying reality constantly?
it's obvious why Obama probablly won't win!
it's just so many of you have convinced yourselves its for some other reason than racism.

Yes we need more strip malls because we can't even keep the mall we have filled with businesses. The new strip mall they built behind Arby's still sits empty. Yes, let's fill the town with empty buildings, that's the ticket! We need business in the town, and when an opportunity for any comes here, it gets sent away. You people that run this town are all nuts and it is too bad the RTC is shut down or they could have a place for you there!

ajohnsonx,
in general I'm against cocaine usage for anyone except the terminally ill.
I feel there are many greater issues that made him unfit to be president!
primarily, the glassy eyed response he gave during his first run for office concerning if he would put a convict to death who hadn't exhausted the appeals process.
His "their gonna die!" response along with the dilation in his pupils and his bodies physical responses told me everything I ever needed to know about him.
he probablly wasn't high, but his body thought it was.
that's how much he enjoyed thinking about having the power to decide life or death for others.
I knew then and there he would get us into a war and kill thousands!
if you knew how to read peoples minds through proven scientific unconscious physical signs like I do, you would understand my disgust for him and Cheney.
I don't have that kind of disgust for McCain.
I just prefer Obamas agenda to McCains, and don't ever want Palin as president.

Metasonics,
Good one!

"if you ever bothered to talk with anyone I've worked with you might be surprised by how many millionaires I've made!"
one would think that a man with this type of brilliance could perhaps make himself a million or two, since it comes so easily for him. Something doesn't add up. The bulls*** meter is in the red zone folks.

I'm with you, lookitup. This has gone from somewhat puzzling to straight-up wacky and unbelievable. May I borrow one of your lines? "The freak show continues." Thanks.

lookitup,
the only things I truly value can't be bought!
I turned down 3.5 million dollar jobs in the past. I'm not living off the taxpayers like some keep suggesting here! I'm also not living high on the hog anymore either. I have a debilitating disease and was robbed of my life savings.
I bought my first home at age 17 and my third at age 23 and had no debts at all by my 30th birthday.
all this while paying child support and raising a child on my own.
I've never been rich but I did work myself out of poverty through hard work and long hours.
a decent portion of my adult life was very comfortable financially until I was robbed.
these are some of the reasons I feel I would be a good council member.
I've had successes and been knocked down by unforeseeable hardships.
I feel this has given me priceless insight of many of the personal trials voters are faced with.

Looks to me like you have very poor judgement. 1) turning down 3.5 million dollar jobs 2) choosing the people you hang out with, that end up robbing you 3) keeping a loaded gun in a business that caters to youth 4) your youtube videos 5) your willingness to buy into fruitcake conspiracy theories 6) your habit of labeling anyone who disagrees with you as a "Republican" (when you don't even know the people) etc, etc, etc ................ We don't need a person making decisions for the City of Fergus Falls that has such poor judgement. You sir, are unfit to serve. The voters will prove my point on November 4. You may get 74 votes, but you will not be on the Council, thank god. You are right about one thing, though - "the only things I truly value can't be bought" - and one of those things is a firm grip on reality, which you clearly do not possess.

brighteyes,
I will attempt to explain to you more of what I meant with the "mind reading" post.
I don't profess to have superhuman powers or anything like that.
what I am referring to has sometimes been called the "sicilian pantomime", and that may be the original origin.
however the techniques I am referring to are documented in our library of congress as coming from the nazis after WW2 via "project paperclip" and have been used ever since by our CIA.
by observing specific facial muscles, micro expressions, and eye patterns, we can essentially read peoples minds.
most of the key information was declassified via the freedom in information act.

lookitup,
well the 3.5 million dollars would have came from helping develop software for weapons guidance systems for a country who may have used those weapons against us or allies at some point.
I'm relatively sure I'm not the first person to have been tricked by someone who they trusted.
and as stated many times before and as eye witness's can prove, as well as the video shows, I didn't have a loaded handgun in my business.
poor judgment?
by your logic I should have endangered lives for the sake of filling my own pockets?
not surprising actually!
LOL
typical republican greed!

lookitup,
I get a kick how you refer to reading our senates intelligence report as "willingness to buy into fruitcake conspiracy theories".
how did our official government records stored in the library of congress and government get so full of fruitcake conspiracy theories?
what are you suggesting?
that our senate is full of liars and Bush is the honest one?
it sounds like you are a conspiracy theorist!
do you have any proof this time?

Jamie,
I know for a fact you did not make Northern Contours a million dollars within a week as you claim to have. Expecially if you were a press operator. And back in '94-'95 the company was still a small company. It took (and still takes) alot of hard work from ALOT of different people to get the product out the door to the customers. I feel it's fair that you think you can take credit soley for yourself when clearly it wasn't just you involved. Now on the other hand, if you were in sales (which you were not), then there might be a possiblilty, but since you were just a press operator, it's highly inlikely anything like that happened at all. I don't think it's right that you are trying to pull wool over peoples eyes and stretching the truth to benefit yourself.

fillerup,
oh really? you know for a fact what it was like working there before you worked there?
I wasn't suggesting that I was the entire white plant, I was rewarded for causing an upswing in production which made them over a million dollars in one week.
thats just what I was told by my employer at the time and I was paid bonuses for it?
doesn't that ever happen there anymore?

Jamie,
How would you know whether I worked there or not back then? I stated that I am connected to Northern Contours for OVER 10 years. Just stating what I know, and correcting certain statements that aren't facts.
Please, continue on with all of your positive campaigning you've been doing on here. (and don't mind me)

fillerup,
lol, I assume you and I didn't work there at the same time because you were claiming I never worked there at all.
apparently whatever your connection is, isn't a very informed one.
I probablly even still have paycheck stubs filed away.
not to mention some of the people I worked with are most likely still employed there.

I was here to Blog about the movie.. Not to run for city office.. I would like to see that we stick to the point on the blogs.. Some of us live here and you all talking crap does not help push the movie to come to town. I would love to see it come it would be jobs for locals big and small.. If your in film you could get job in cast as anything from extra to roll in film.. I see nothing wrong with this movie .. oh and fear of someone not coming to the school hum .. Is the movie about China NO its not.. look up other movies with ties to this area .. you will find a lot and most have big actors and still sell today.. Bring the movie give them a chance.. I have worked in Film and TV .. Think About this before you vote no to something that the locals may want .. ASK THE TOWN as its our town we live here, work here, and pay the city offices to work for us not to let us down.. Oh we also Vote you In or Out of Office ... Remember That...
