A lesson in ‘I and ‘me’

Published Wednesday, October 8, 2008

I guess it is time to remind people the correct usage of the pronouns “I” and “me.”

If someone does something to us, it is to you and me. If we do something it is you and I.

For example, “Jim and I went to the game, but he bought tickets for you and me.”

Another example: “The policeman caught you and me, but it was you and I who went to jail.”

For using an object for a subject or a subject for an object.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

I guess it is time to remind letter writers to use complete sentences. ("For using an object for a subject or a subject for an object.")

This writer comes up with the most ridiculous letters. The bible bangin' stuff is the worst. Them and me agree!

Why does the Editor at the Daily Journal waste the paper and ink on these types of letters? Me wants to know.

I know. I know! There just isn't that much else to choose from. Shores and Thompson own that sheet.

And, so many make comments to their letters, it must be a good thing, no??? (grin) Keep 'em coming DJ.

I believe Ms. Shores' letter was directed AT the Journal. See the second paragraph here:

Can we start getting some political plans printed or posted from our local campaigners instead of giving space to this ridiculous, trivial, condescending junk? "I" would really appreciate it.

2 cents. If you are real lucky, stay healthy, and alive, you just "may be" old some day. Being stupid or dumb, that is up to you. Me think I be right, and you be wrong!!!!

Why are so many of you upset that someone pointed out that your local newspaper columnists could use a refresher course in the language they get paid to write? (GrammarNazi provides you with a link to the error) I'm new to the area so maybe with time I'll understand why 2cents was allowed the space to write. . .however, I doubt it.
