School board considers discipline for streaker

Published Wednesday, October 8, 2008

An emergency school board meeting was held Tuesday evening to discuss possible disciplinary measures for the Fergus Falls student who streaked during Friday’s homecoming football game. The school board does not plan to take action on the matter, and will not include the issue in upcoming school board meetings.

After discussing possible disciplinary measures, the school board’s collective thoughts were relayed to school officials, who considered the board’s thoughts when determining final disciplinary action. School officials will meet with the student’s parents Friday to discuss school punishment.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

My gosh...are there not worse things going on in our community, such as meth users, sexual predators, porn freaks, abuse situations, etc. Holy smokes what a waste of taxpayer's dollars, a teenager's delayed learning and schoolwork, a set of parent's time and emotional stress, the community's wasted time with gossip and story telling, and so on.
And now no discipline meeting for a decision on what is going to be done until Friday! How pathetic. Just what are they trying to really do to this kid? Obviously, sweat a little & wait it out. Ha ha.
He and the parents will be in my thoughts. I sure hope they have refreshed their knowledge on his rights & the school's responsibilites. He should have to be accountable for his actions, but this is getting ridiculous.

There are worse things going on in the community, but it doesn't mean that the matter doesn't have to be dealt with, regardless of what the outcome is for the student.

Give him some work to do after school. In school suspension or whatever.
Not saying its true, but somethimes negative attention from parents, friends, school and etc. is better than no attention.

OH MY GOODNESS there are people raping my children and putting drugs in my food and we are wasting my tax dollars on someone who broke the law. I think what they're trying to accomplish is to put THE FEAR OF GOD in this kid so he doesn't grow up to be in the circus, or end up in the ottertail county jail for stealing gas at the age of 34. It's a small community-of course it's going to get a lot of attention. I'm sure all the Fergus area gang-activity will SOAR to an all-time high while the police department and school board metes out the appropriate punishment!

Oh my gosh watermelon... "people raping your children?!?!" what a horrifying statement. You can't be serious. If you are, then get off of here, and deal with those bigger issues you have.

Also... gang-activity? Seriously? Fergus Falls does not have "gangs". They may have a bunch of hoodlums, but they do not have gangs. LOL If you want to see what a "gang" looks like, go drive through Los Angeles. Unless I just haven't gotten around, and Fergus Falls now has "crips" and "bloods". ??? :-)

I thought that in situations like this the media is NOT supposed to give any press, just like on TV when there is a streaker at an event, there are never replays of it because everyone who wants their minute of fame would get it on the replays? Maybe the Journal could do individual interviews with those running for city positions before the upcoming elections instead of giving this kid exactly what he wants.

This is all starting to get real annoying. Suspend him for a while and let it be. It was a stupid prank that I'm sure he regrets now. Let him go home to his parents, that'll be punishment enough I'm sure.
