Stepping back in time

Published Thursday, October 9, 2008

Rolf Stang stood in front of a class at Cleveland Elementary Wednesday looking like he stepped out of a time machine.

His attire, he explained to the class, dates back to1870, when the writer Hans Christian Andersen was 65-years-old.

Stang, who hangs his top hat in New York City, made his way to Fergus Falls to share the tales of Andersen, whose messages Stang believes continue to ring true in today’s society.

Before diving into the story of The Ugly Duckling, Stang let the class in on a simple but powerful message.

“You can’t give up,” Stang told Lynette Ringquist’s class of third grade students. “You can choose what to wear in the morning or what sandwich to make, but you can’t choose to ever give up.”

As Stang read through the story, he was sure to translate the message into the lives of the young students.

“Don’t ever let yourselves be teased,” he said.

His message was both helpful and timely, as this week is being celebrated throughout the country as the third annual Bully Prevention Awareness Week.

Stang, who has spoken to 50,000 students, began his storytelling adventures 15 years ago.

“I’ve been unable to stop,” he said.

On top of traveling to tell the tales of Andersen, Stang spends his time in New York City writing, translating and singing.

“When you live in New York City, you don’t have to do just one thing,” he told the class.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

It looks like they are exchanging a check and what is with the Kiwanis club banner in the back all about? The story does not say much about the picture?

So now you changed the picture? There was a different picture there before.

Kiwanis members have helped shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They have developed youth as leaders, built playgrounds, and raised funds for pediatric research

Thank-you
Coop
for
your
wisdom
and
knowledge
LOL
There was a picture of a man handing another man a check and a Kiwanis banner behind them. When I saw that,I was curious why the DJ did not mention anything about the check and a donation from the Kiwanis. I am well aware of the wonderfull things that the Kiwanis do. The DJ must have put the wrong picture in and then changed it after I questioned what was going on in the picture. Thank-you Coop I am sure Kiwanis members will be casting many votes for you. LOL

I would be honored as the Kiwanis and myself share the same ethics.
