Chamber offers ‘taste’ of Fergus

Published Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Lisa Workman

The Chamber of Commerce is planning for its third annual “Chamber Night Out — Taste of Fergus Falls,” an event that will include new entertainment, food options and auction items.

Scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Bigwood Event Center, the “Taste of Fergus Falls” evolved from the Chamber’s annual meeting. It outgrew the Elks Special Event Center and is in its second year at the Bigwood.

“It does serve the purpose of the annual meeting, but we wanted to include the entire community,” said Chamber Director Lisa Workman. “The ‘Taste of Fergus Falls’ has just turned into this fabulous event.”

This year, that event will include performances by the Fergus Falls High School orchestra, 10 to 15 restaurant booths, and a silent auction representing over 100 local businesses. Eight items will be up for sale during a live action. Participants can also buy raffle tickets to win one of 12 themed baskets designed by Chamber board members.

Another highlight is the presentation of the Chamber’s annual STARS (Strength Through Action, Responsibility and Service to community) Awards. The awards recognize an individual who promotes Fergus Falls and is actively committed to community growth. A business or non-profit organization is also honored. The 2007 recipients were Gary Spies and Quality Toyota.

Wednesday is the deadline for STARS nominations, which can be submitted to the Chamber by phone at 218-736-6951, by e-mail at chamber@prtel.com, or in person at the Chamber office.

Tickets to the “Taste of Fergus Falls” are $20 for Chamber members and $25 for non-members. Numbers are limited to 325, Workman said, and half of the tickets have sold so far. The event is scheduled to run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Hey "Jsmie".... I was commenting on the local restaurant fare. Figure it out! Usually a "taste" isn't your Mom bringing in her famous Funeral Hotdish, but a RESTAURANT wanting to showcase their menu.

There are no Big Macs or BK Broilers at Taste of FF. In the past, delicious entree "tastes" have been served. You should go and check it out before passing judgment.
I am consistently amazed at the pessimistic bloggers. Have you thought about moving to the other side of the fence?

I think the point that "msrealestate" was trying to get across is that if we were talking about a true "taste" of fergus falls as far as dining out and outsiders are concerned, there isn't much of a choice other than fast food or awful bar/restaurant chains.

When new restaurants actually do come to town, they usually don't stay long because the locals complain too much about how expensive it is, how rude the people are or how unfriendly said restaurants are to kids. An example is the Jazzy Fox, which now switched to italian before giving up entirely on this community. That's why all you have is fast food. Because everyone is afraid of new things.

Yes, we all know that it's a big fancy potluck. I will personally be contributing my delicious "canned beans n' frankfurters in a casserole dish." You provide the buns.

It's not up to par with your hit single, "Kill Everyone," but I see it has disappeared from youtube taking into consideration that you are running for city council.

Thanks Watermelon, that is exactly the point I was trying to get across. If it really is a "taste" in which locals bring in their own food, I appologize. I equate a "Taste of __________" as a taste of the local restaurants - something I think Fergus is very much lacking. Just because Fergus is a small midwest town, I don't think you have to stay that way in terms of food options. I'm sure there are many people who have a more varied pallet than burgers, pizza and chinese buffet! It's too bad the locals don't support these things once they do come in. They are missing a great experience.

msRealEstate, I ate at the viking recently and there wasn't any big macs, strange? the buff steaks at Big chief are still just as great as usual.
why do some feel cultural events need to be commercialized?
what would be the harm if families did bring family recipe dishes to an event like this?

watermelon, the music video for my song parodying people the likes of which have been yelling for the murder of a certain presidential candidate recently has never been taken down.
I know you and your Republican cartel live in a bit of fantasy land so I'll provide the link for you this time myself.

dining establishments I personally would love to see come to Fergus are:
Schlotzkys, Taco Bell, Buffalo wild wings, Space Aliens, and the Olive Garden.

msRealEstate,
while I agree with you on your point that you wish there were more dining options in Fergus falls, I feel it is relevant to point out the vast majority of people living in Fergus falls don't have incomes that can support spending $75.00 for two people to eat a meal.
most of us can't afford to spend $10.00 on a sandwich like at Mabel Murphys.
Mabel Murphys does offer a very good and diverse menu for those who have the means to enjoy a finer dining experience.
while I'll agree that the wine menu may be a bit lacking when compared to a NYC restaurant.
sutter home is the same wine the olive garden serves.
Gallo of sonoma is possibly the best wine in the world as it's many awards can attest.
to end I'll just sat that I feel you were a bit unfair as to your characterization of the availability of fine dining locally, but I agree that more options would be nice.

let's hope the “Chamber Night Out — Taste of Fergus Falls,” event goes well and continues to grow!

Mabel Murphy's

Ten Mile Steak House

Bella Cucina

Dairyland

Something's Brewin'

Barringers

Union Cafe

Stumbeano's Coffee

Don Pablo's

Locally owned with great products. We have a lot of tastes to offer, and I probably even missed some.

PS For the record, I greatly miss Thomas Kao's restraunt. That place was a gem. I was sad when it closed but I had hopes that someday it would open again.
