Now is the time to help reload the blood supply
Published Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Hurricane damage, flooding and high winds throughout the United State caused a number of blood drives to be canceled. We are happy to report our recent drive was a great success, thus we were part of the effort to supply much of what has been needed.
We surpassed our goals and collected over 300 units last week. We welcomed 24 first-time donors, some of which were youth 16 years of age. We hope these young folks will share stories of their experience and bring a friend with them next time.
Milestones were set by Donna Schoening, 13 gallons, Al Hexem, 11 gallons and Karen J. Johnson 10 gallons. What faithful donors these folks are.
It takes many hands and hours to sponsor this event. We are grateful to Westridge Mall for the spacious facility and the help to prepare it for our use. When the staff arrived from St. Paul, the maintenance workers from Lake Region Hospital and Sentence to Serve crew were on hand to assist with unloading, and on Friday to load it up again.
It is busy as a beehive during the event with volunteers who register and assist with food service each day. Behind the scenes many friendly voices make phone calls to schedule appointments and provide information.
Other volunteers deliver posters to all area businesses and prepare mailings to donors. Wonderful cooks, including Barb and Dick Schauff and Carol Hovland feed our workers and volunteers. Radio Shack provided a cell phone for our use. Park Region Phone Company, Lakes Radio, The Daily Journal and Shopping News publicize our message.
Area churches include an appeal for donors in newsletters and bulletins. To these many helping hands we offer our thanks. All of you are a big part of our success.
The Bloodmobile will be back in Fergus Falls in January. Please watch for dates and other information and if you are not a donor consider becoming one.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by Vampire (anonymous) on October 14, 2008 at 3:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Everyone should give Blood. The more the better. Anything I can do to help just let me know, I’ll be hanging around in January.
