Reader agrees: This is one dying town

Published Thursday, October 23, 2008

Thank you Rich Hench. I graduated with you, was confirmed with you and felt you were a friend. Boy, do I agree with you.

Fergus is a dying town thanks to the lack of opened mindedness there.

Like you I have never looked back on leaving that town. What Fergus needs is more open-minded people who aren't afraid to try new venues.

Look at the RTC — the leaders can only see one, maybe two things to do with the beautiful buildings. Destroy it seems to be No. 1.

Movies would have at least shown the town wanted to move on into the 21st century.

Thanks Rich for saying what I've known for a long time. The town lacks forward-thinking people.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

To those who live in FF,
Support your school, (I don't mean buildings)
Shop in town.
Promote and keep your classic buildings, RTC and others.
Be nice to your neigbors. Go to Church.
Support your police dept.
Who wants to add to this list?

I believe that a lot of fergus falls residents WANT these 'new up & coming' things, but it's the people in charge of this town who won't allow such futuristic changes. Why do ex-residents always leave such nasty opinions on the daily journal? If fergus is such a black hole than leave it at that and forget about it. It is so strange to me that people continue to let fergus 'bother' them..... looks like the jokes on you Diana!

I agree... how did this letter get in the paper anyway?? Very unproductive and unimportant. Get a life Diana!

If you really want to get the town economy going, extend the new business tax break to all business' and make them permanent.

I love Fergus Falls. I know that is an uncommon, and perhaps unpopular, thing to say but its true. I've always felt that Fergus, despite its flaws, is a nice and caring community. I've lived in several other areas in this country and never have I felt as welcomed as I do in Fergus. I also believe that Fergus is at a crucial time in its history. A lot of things can change right now for the better or possibly for the worse. What Fergus doesn't need right now are the negative people ragging on those that have worked to try and make things better. You Monday morning quarterbacks. You backseat drivers. We don't need you. Kudos to our school board members. Our city council. Mayor. Teachers. And everyone else that gives of their time to try and make Fergus a better place. It is true that mistakes are made sometimes, but at least these people are giving of their time to try and change Fergus for the better...amen : )

Fergus has always been a town where the business owners sit on the council and vote no to any possible competition. It's the voters fault. Keep them business owners off the council and just maybe you'll see some progress. Look at Alexandria. That town boomed while Fergus died. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why.

I see the primary reason for FF downturn is that our leadership has not changed; new, young, fresh ideas and concepts should be employed, just like the technology changes for our phones/internets, whatever, so too should progress be nutured in by electing younger, vibrant folks. It is good to always keep in mind that the older folks have much wisdom, and they should be welcome to add and offer, but it is going to take a new generation of leaders to initiate any progress here. I agree with Diana, and all others that have commented in the past. There are a long line of reasons why what she said is true......
